Sandiaga Uno launches office daycare amid maternity leave debate
Jakarta. Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno has proposed the establishment of daycare centres in offices, amid controversy over extended maternity leave policies. The new law mandates maternity leave of up to six months, up from three months previously, raising concerns among employers about workforce productivity and women's employment.
“This policy will allow mothers to bring their babies to the office and receive proper care, including breastfeeding and childcare facilities, allowing them to be with their children in the same room,” Sandiaga Uno said after a meeting with President Joko Widodo at the presidential palace complex in Jakarta on Monday.
Sandiaga plans to launch daycare centers in his ministry this month, following a successful implementation at the Jakarta provincial government office.
The former deputy governor of Jakarta pointed out that more than 50 percent of workers in Indonesia's tourism and creative economy sectors are women. He advocated finding common ground to empower women while preserving the rights of women workers.
“We need to empower women so that mothers can continue to contribute effectively. That's the balance we want to achieve,” he said.
To address the sector’s concerns, the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy will assess employers’ views on the policy through dedicated teams. Sandiaga also aims to leverage technology to help new mothers maintain their productivity.
“We need to put in place mechanisms that support women without compromising productivity. Technology offers innovative solutions for the creative economy,” he stressed.
Sandiaga believes that Indonesia's tourism and creative economy sectors are committed to empowering women and supporting children's development.
President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo recently signed into law Law No. 4 of 2024, which focuses on the well-being of mothers and children during the first thousand days of life. Signed in Jakarta on July 2, the law guarantees rights to mothers after giving birth, such as spousal support and children’s developmental needs.
President Jokowi said Monday at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base in Jakarta that maternity leave would not exceed six months for working mothers. “Granting this leave to prepare for childbirth and take care of infants is deeply humane,” he added.
