GOP Adopts Platform That Softens Language on Abortion, Same-Sex Marriage

Republican delegates adopted presumptive nominee Donald Trump's convention agenda at a meeting in Milwaukee on Monday, abandoning long-held positions on abortion and same-sex marriage while adopting new plans for mass deportations and renewed opposition to changing the Social Security retirement age.

“I hope you’ll pass it. You’ll pass it quickly, and we’ll show unity in our party, unlike the disaster that’s happening with the Democrats,” Trump said when he called the meeting, according to people present who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe the private event. “We’re going to win because we have right on our side. We have good on our side. I think, frankly, we have God on our side. These people are opposed to religion.”

The document, with a lengthy introduction in Trump's voice, ignored the concerns of anti-abortion activists who had announced before the meeting that they wanted the document to explicitly call for a constitutional amendment to give embryos or fetuses legal rights.

The document was presented Monday to members of the Republican convention platform committee, a group selected by Trump campaign leaders. The 2016 platform, which Trump used in his 2020 reelection campaign, called for a constitutional amendment to affirm constitutional due process rights for embryos and fetuses, and a national law that would ban abortion, with limited exceptions, after about 20 weeks of gestation.

Trump has changed his position on the issue since the Supreme Court struck down the fundamental right to the procedure early in pregnancy. He now argues that each state should set its own regulations.

Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council and a member of the platform committee, said he was disappointed with the outcome. The 2024 platform is a decent statement of campaign priorities, but not necessarily the party’s enduring principles, he said in a statement that objected to the lack of opportunity for amendments. Ralph Reed, the head of the Faith and Freedom Coalition, who had publicly warned Trump against changing the abortion language, thanked the former president in a statement for including language saying the Constitution's due process clause gives states the power to restrict abortion.

The 2016 document was much larger, at 54 pages of dense text.
