Boris Johnson claims we're heading for serfdom if Starmer changes our horrible Brexit deal. Ignore him | Naomi Smith

LWe are witnessing a Conservative movement so destitute, so short of ideas, that it keeps returning to its old successes. At the end of their reign, with Britain poorer, sicker and less free, it is not clear where the Conservatives are going. Yet idiocy loves a vacuum, and so it is time to talk about Boris Johnson again.

On Sunday, the disgraced former tenant of 10 Downing Street suggested that Keir Starmer would set Britain on the path to serfdom if he sought to improve Johnson’s chaotic Brexit deal. Even now, he and those who still praise him seem unable to comprehend the damage they have done. Where once we could travel, live and work freely across the continent, Britons now face delays, visa fees and roaming charges. Where once our businesses could sell as easily to someone in Berlin as to someone in Birmingham, they now face red tape, delays and extra charges. And, in line with Johnson’s accusation, where once the British people had a say in the rules that govern our trade with our biggest market, we no longer have any.

Instead of an unfettered Britain, we have an unmoored Britain, our country adrift, more vulnerable to economic headwinds and the whims of the world’s biggest players. Even accounting for Covid and Ukraine, Brexit has caused higher consumer prices and lower economic growth, and all for benefits that no one can articulate without the preface: Well, maybe in the decades to come. Those who claim that Brexit offers opportunities rarely go into detail. When they do, they almost never explain the trade-offs.

So, ignore the revisionism, it was Johnson who brought serfdom to the UK. He said fuck business and he kept his word.

Boris Johnson's warning to Keir Starmer on the front page of the Mail on Sunday.

Fixing the problems the UK faces after Brexit will not be easy. Starmer has promised that economic growth must be his government’s top priority. The quickest and most obvious way to do this without additional investment or revenue increases is to lift the Brexit shackles on British businesses. But having said he is unlikely to join the customs union and single market in his lifetime, how much room does Starmer have to improve Johnson’s deal?

In fact, it is somewhat true. Last year, cross-party MPs and industry leaders from the UK Trade and Business Commission 114 recommended fixes for Brexit deal publishedall of which fall within Starmers’ red lines. These proposals were endorsed by business at the Trade Unlocked conference. They are also hugely popular with the British public.

This is a good starting point and there are things that the EU also wants. An unwelcome request talks about youth mobility This is clearly an early exercise on the part of Brussels, and we know that they also want to strengthen cooperation on security and defence. On our side, British businesses, farmers, fishermen, employers, manufacturers, researchers and innovators all need regulatory certainty. Just as the Conservative Government agreed to align with high European standards because of the economic cost it would entail, this Labour Government can codify it. Beneficial alignment would provide the certainty that businesses have been deprived of for almost a decade and would boost direct investment.

Johnson charged the summit of the European political community Next week, the UK will come face to face with its continental counterparts. It will be a valuable opportunity for the new British government to build trust with its continental counterparts. But the real work on trade will begin away from the pomp and ceremony of Blenheim Palace, with ongoing dialogue intensifying as the formal review approaches. UK-EU Trade Cooperation Agreement in 2026.

It is crucial that Starmer strikes a new tone with our European neighbours, which he may have already done through the power of image alone. Together, we face existential external threats. We cannot afford to wage new fake wars with our closest democratic allies as authoritarian regimes are about to dismantle democracy in the US and cross borders into Europe, another reason why Johnson’s combat metaphors in the context of EU relations are particularly odious.

Johnson considers himself a student of history, which is why he accuses Starmer of pursuing Tsarist Russian-style policies. big retreat Johnson’s decision to withdraw from Brexit is unlikely to be accidental. But if he knew a little history, Johnson would understand that for a good general, retreat is by far the best decision when a plan has been fatally flawed or terribly poorly executed. Both are true in the case of Johnson’s Brexit. Starmer should ignore the hyperbole about serfdom: any retreat from what Johnson has put in place is likely to be a winning strategy.
