Narendra Modi arrives in Austria, first visit by an Indian prime minister in over 40 years

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Vienna on July 9 from Moscow for a two-day visit to Austria during which the two nations will explore ways to further deepen their bilateral relations and strengthen cooperation on the many geopolitical challenges.

“I have landed in Vienna. This visit to Austria is special. Our nations are bound by common values and a commitment to a better planet. I am looking forward to the various programs in Austria, including talks with Chancellor @karlnehammer, interactions with the Indian community and much more,” the Prime Minister posted on X, along with a series of photographs.
Prime Minister Modi was welcomed at the airport by Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg.
This is the first visit by an Indian prime minister to Austria in over 40 years, the last being that of Indira Gandhi in 1983.
In a message posted on X, the Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson said, “As both countries celebrate the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations this year, this memorable visit will add new momentum to India-Austria relations.”
Prime Minister Modi will call on President of the Republic of Austria Alexander Van der Bellen and hold talks with Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer on June 10.
The Prime Minister and the Chancellor will also address Indian and Austrian business leaders.
Ahead of his visit to Austria, Prime Minister Modi on Sunday said that the shared values of democracy, freedom and rule of law form the foundation on which the two countries will build an ever closer partnership.
PM Modi's statement comes a day after Austrian Chancellor Nehammer posted on 'X': “I am very much looking forward to welcoming Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, the world's largest democracy, next week in Vienna.”
“This visit is a special honour as it marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister in over 40 years and an important milestone as we celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations with India,” he said.
“We will have the opportunity to discuss the deepening of our bilateral relations and closer cooperation on the many geopolitical challenges,” said the Austrian Chancellor.
Responding to Mr Nehammer, Prime Minister Modi said, “Thank you, Chancellor Karl Nehammer. It is indeed an honour to visit Austria to mark this historic event. I look forward to our discussions on strengthening ties between our nations and exploring new avenues of cooperation.”
