Establishment must step back to ensure transparent elections: Imran Khan

Jailed and beleaguered Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder chairman Imran Khan has stressed the urgent need for the establishment to take a step back to ensure transparent elections in the country.

“If we want to save the country, the establishment must take a step back and move towards transparent elections,” the former prime minister said in an informal media interview at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi today.

The PTI chief highlighted the drastic increase in the national debt, saying that in 2021 it was Rs 2.8 trillion but in four years it had shot up to Rs 8-9 trillion.

He criticised the current government for failing the nation, saying: “The current government has destroyed the hope of Pakistan; no one trusts this government anymore.”

Imran highlighted the heavy economic burdens on ordinary people, pointing out that “the poor who once had a Rs 2,000 note now have to face a Rs 10,000 bill.”

In a previous press conference, Imran had stressed that the IMF could not solve the country's problems, saying the solution lay in fair and transparent elections.

He expressed concern that Pakistan, which was leading until 1990, was now being overtaken by other nations.

He accused the elite of hiding their wealth abroad and accused the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) of “historic” fraud in the February 8 general elections.

“Everyone knows that the ECP held fraudulent elections,” he accused.

Referring to the judiciary, Imran mentioned that CJP Isa is sending his party to the ECP for justice, despite knowing the credibility issues of the commission.

Imran also asked why their human rights petitions and the February 8 case are not being heard by the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

He criticized the trial of civilians before military courts, asking: “In what democracy are civilians tried before military courts?”

Addressing the issue of media crackdown, he said there are plans to curb media activities. “The Congress claims that fraudulent elections were held in Pakistan,” he added.

Responding to a journalist's question about the role of the establishment, Imran said: “The establishment runs the country; SIFC runs the country.”

Asked about the testimony of a former cabinet member against him, Imran brushed it off saying: “I will talk about it later, he has not said anything significant.”

Regarding the announcement of his hunger strike, Imran confirmed: “I will definitely go on hunger strike; I am waiting for decisions.”

On July 4, Imran expressed his lack of confidence in the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Qazi Faez Isa, and declared his intention to go on a hunger strike in prison.

Imran highlighted objections raised by his legal team over the judge's repeated presence, indicating a growing belief within his camp that justice may not be delivered impartially in such circumstances.

The PTI founder referred to a recent ruling by the five-judge Gulzar bench, which supported his team's position that the chief justice should not preside over their cases. Further, he noted the administrative dynamics within the jail, mentioning the involvement of senior military officials in day-to-day operations.

Referring to the incident in which a scheduled meeting with his team was unexpectedly cancelled, Imran expressed disappointment over the missed opportunity to resolve internal conflicts had the meeting gone ahead as planned.
