Starmer is a man and deserves our trust

Jeremy Corbyn is no longer a Labour MP. Boris Johnson is no longer an MP. George Galloway is no longer an MP. Liz Truss is no longer an MP. Keir Starmer is our Prime Minister.

I think it would be fair to say that on the morning of December 13, 2019, no one could have predicted any of these outcomes. I'm not even sure anyone would have taken the bet, let alone placed it.

After the last general election, every political commentator wondered whether Labour could ever hold on to power. The spectre of the Independent Electoral and Reform Commission (EHRC) report was a constant reminder of Corbyn’s nightmare tenure as leader of the opposition, and almost everyone thought that Boris Johnson had built an electoral coalition that had definitively redrawn our political map.

But last week the country decided that Labour had changed, that we could be trusted to lead government and that change was needed.

After the Partygate scandal, the Truss economic disaster and three prime ministers in three years, how can we trust the Conservatives to stay in power? And that's without even considering the damage done to the very fabric of our society after 14 years of Conservative government.

As a result, Keir Starmer's Labour Party has a majority of 181 seats and the Conservative Party recorded its worst result since 1832.

Even I struggle to grasp the magnitude of what this means for our country, for my city of Stoke-on-Trent and for our community. It is beyond my wildest expectations and I can’t help but smile every time I think about it. The images of Rachel Reeves, Wes Streeting, John Healey, Shabana Mahmood, Angela Smith, Peter Kyle, Ian Murray and the rest of the new cabinet marching into Downing Street on Friday brought tears far happier to my eyes than those that followed the 2019 election.

Five years ago our community would have been frightened by the prospect of a Labour landslide. The pages of JC There would have been many stories of families worried about the future and considering making aliyah. Thank God, we are not there today.

Having uprooted the poisonous plant of anti-Semitism in my party, Keir (or the Prime Minister as I have to get used to calling him) has managed to rebuild enough trust with you that Hendon, Finchley and Golders Green, Chipping Barnet, Bury North, Bury South and East Renfrewshire have all returned Labour MPs. And I honestly do not believe that anyone, whatever their personal political views, regards a Labour government as an existential threat to our community, because it is not.

This in itself is a miracle. I will be forever grateful to Keir for fixing what I thought was irreparably broken.

He is a good man. And he deserves this opportunity to lead our country in the years to come. He has earned our trust and we owe him a fair hearing as he moves from the campaign trail to government. Elections are just the first step. We now have the privilege of serving and trying to repair what has been broken in our society after 14 years of Conservative governments.

This is my last column for the JC In the near future, I hope to make my contribution in a Labour government to help our country. For too long, politics has been treated like a game, with ministers forgetting that every decision made in Whitehall has a direct impact on a person's life, on a child's future, on the hopes of a community.

We are tired of politics being serious business, of governance being serious business and of governance being entrusted to serious people. So now we must act for you and for all those who voted for us and for those who did not.

Wish us luck and hold us accountable as we seek to deliver on the promises we made to rebuild our country.
