Beard-Hating Donald Trump Has Reservations About JD Vance's Facial Hair: Report

Beard-Hating Donald Trump Has Reservations About JD Vance's Facial Hair: Report

There are many reasons to be concerned that Donald Trump will nominate Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance as his running mate for 2024. For one, there’s Vance’s regurgitation of far-right lies about the 2020 election. For another, there’s his uncommitted commitment to accepting the results of the upcoming election. In between, there’s his position on abortion (he’s compared it to slavery and said, regarding exceptions for rape and incest, that two wrongs don’t make a right); his position on rehabilitative care (he wants to ban it for minors and has introduced legislation that would make providing it a felony punishable by up to 25 years in prison); his views on marriage (he’s suggested that people should stay in abusive marriages for their children and criticized no-fault divorce); and his views on the epidemic of gun violence in America (he called efforts to ban bump stocks a huge distraction). Among other things!

But for Trump, there seems to be only one thing about Vance that makes him lose sleep: the beards of Ohio lawmakers. Yes, really.

Marc Caputo and Tim Miller report that while Trump has praised Vance’s beautiful blue eyes and long eyelashes, the senator’s facial hair gives the ex-president pause. JD has a beard. But Trump is a clean-shaven guy. He just doesn’t like facial hair, a person familiar with Trump’s thinking who supports Vance for vice president told the outlet. You never know. As for why Vance wouldn’t shave his face and never look back, well, it’s apparently not that simple. That’s probably out of the question for Vance given his young age and appearance, The Bulwark notes, and Trump wants someone who has experience or at least looks like it. Without a beard, a Trump adviser said, Vance looks like he’s 12 years old.

Does this all sound completely absurd to you? Yes. But does it square with what we’ve long known about (1) Trump’s views on facial hair and (2) the superficial details he cares about when hiring people? Also yes.

Here is The Bulwark again:

Trump’s aversion to facial hair is legendary. On Father’s Day in 2020, Trump asked his son Don Jr. to shave off his COVID quarantine beard and compared it unfavorably to Ted Cruz’s[s] and Rand Pauls. In 2016, the Washington Post reported that John Bolton might not have been considered for secretary of state because of his iconic mustache. But Trump’s pick for national security adviser, Michael Flynn, fell through. And Trump appeared to overcome his facial hair phobia by choosing Bolton as his replacement.

Look, this mustache thing, well, my father had a mustache, Trump told Bolton during a meeting [at] Mar-a-Lago, according to Bolton, who relayed the vignette to the Bulwark. It was as if he were saying, “Don’t worry. I’m not sure this is a Freudian question.” But that was the gist of the conversation, Bolton said. [As for] As for whether a full beard would simply be too much for Trump, Bolton was honest: I don't know.

As president, Trump reportedly chose not to reappoint Janet Yellen as Federal Reserve chair, in part because he thought she was too small for the job. He also described Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, two of his Supreme Court nominees, as being out of central casting, suggesting that senators should have supported them for that reason. Speaking to Fox News in 2019, he said he struggled to stick to his position on withdrawing from Afghanistan when top generals advised him not to.

So yes, this beard story is true.

They are afraid of him because they think he might start World War III.
