President Joko Jokowi Widodo inaugurated the Jokowi Learning Center (JLC) building at Kebangsaan High School (SMA Kebangsaan) in South Lampung Regency, Lampung Province on Thursday afternoon (11/07). In his speech, the President stressed the importance of developing high-quality human capital to increase global competitiveness.

“I am delighted that students here come from 28 provinces, even from Papua. This is remarkable. This means that SMA Kebangsaan is recognized nationally because there are students from 28 provinces. In addition, we need superior human capital to face global competitiveness,” the president said.

He also explained that even if the infrastructure is good, it would be meaningless if the quality of Indonesian human capital is low. We can see this from the global competitiveness ranking published by the Institute for Management Development (IMD). However, Indonesian competitiveness may be at level 27, but it is unbalanced by the level of the education and health sector which is at 57. That is why he hopes that high schools like SMA Kebangsaan can be provided throughout the country.

“We can see between Indonesia and Malaysia, which country has the best infrastructure. Between Indonesia and Thailand, we can see which country has the best technology, the best innovations and the best healthcare. If all the ministers, people like us who are more fortunate like Pak Hatta Radjasa, Pak Boy Thohir can provide dozens of secondary schools like SMA Kebangsaan, Indonesia will improve and we will have superior human capital,” the President explained.

On this occasion, the President also expressed his appreciation to SMA Kebangsaan for its environment, landscaping and various modern facilities. SMA Kebangsaan was the right choice. In addition, he also emphasized that speed is essential to cope with global competitiveness. Then, to achieve the goal, we needed superior human capital with all the required skills.

“When I enter this school, I can see a beautiful environment, beautiful landscaping. The chairman of the Foundation, the principal and Pak Toto showed me the modern facilities here. Pak Zulkifli Hasan told me that this school aims to improve the living standards of our people, especially the lower middle class. I can say that it is the right choice to send children to study here. I always say at every opportunity that in the future, the fast country will beat the slow country.
