Erdogan: Turkey is the first to benefit from peace in Syria
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) meeting in Washington, Erdogan mentioned a meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, saying Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan was currently developing a road map through discussions with his counterparts.
He said that Ankara believes that a just peace is possible in Syria, and his government declares at every opportunity that the security of Syrian territory is also in Turkey's interest.
Erdogan also stressed that the most important step in the Syrian peace process is the beginning of a new era between the two countries.
Stating that his country has been trying for years to resolve the conflicts in Syria, he said the most important thing Ankara wants is for no one to be upset by the atmosphere that allows Syria to build a new unified state.
Erdogan had earlier stressed that Turkey had extended a friendly hand to Syria and expressed its desire to normalize relations with the Arab country.
However, Turkey has long violated the territorial integrity of Iraq and Syria under the pretext of confronting elements of the armed group known as the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which has been listed as a terrorist entity by Turkey, the United States and the European Union.
The Damascus government has repeatedly stressed that the withdrawal of Turkish military forces from northern Syria is a prelude to the process of normalizing relations with Ankara.
