Former PM Imran Khan and his wife handed over to anti-graft agency in remand in fresh corruption case

ISLAMABAD: A Pakistani court on Sunday handed over jailed former prime minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi to the country’s anti-graft authorities for eight days’ physical remand to probe a fresh case of alleged corruption. The couple was arrested by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) soon after a district and sessions court on Saturday quashed their conviction in their un-Islamic marriage case. The court order also said that Khan and Bibi should be released immediately unless they are wanted in other cases. The NAB, which has filed a fresh Toshakhana case against the couple, produced them before Justice Muhammad Ali Warraich of the accountability court on Sunday. The judge conducted the hearing inside Adiala Jail due to security reasons. NAB Deputy Director Mohsin Haroon, who led the team that arrested them, sought their remand and the court, after hearing the lawyers, agreed to grant eight days of remand. The court then ordered the two to be produced on July 22. The remand period can be extended up to a maximum of 40 days at the request of the NAB if it is necessary to investigate the suspects.
