Pakistani government announces ban on former PM Imran Khan's party, deepening unrest

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan's government is considering banning the party of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is accused of illegally receiving foreign funds and participating in nationwide riots after his arrest last year, the information minister said Monday.

The move risks significantly worsening political unrest in the country, which began after Khan was ousted in a 2022 no-confidence vote in parliament. Khan, the main rival of current Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, remains a popular figure despite his convictions in a series of cases he says are politically motivated.

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said the government has credible evidence against the Khans Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party. The government has long accused the party of receiving money from foreign individuals and groups. Under Pakistani law, political parties are not allowed to accept such donations.

Tarar said the government can ban the party under the Pakistani Constitution, but the decision would be forwarded to the Supreme Court for approval.

Khan's party has accused the Sharif-led coalition government of panicking following a series of court rulings that dismissed many cases against the former prime minister.

Monday's announcement comes two days after a court overturned the convictions and seven-year sentences handed down to Khan and his wife. His supporters had expected them to be released after nearly a year in prison, but government authorities immediately rearrested him on charges related to last year's riots.

The acquittal of Khan and his wife Bibi is linked to the legality of their 2018 marriage. She was previously married to a man who claimed to have divorced her in November 2017, less than three months before she married Khan. Islamic law requires a three-month waiting period before a new marriage.

Bibi said they divorced in August 2017 and the couple insisted they had not violated the waiting period.

Khan has been implicated in more than 150 cases since 2022, when he lost a no-confidence motion. He was arrested in May 2023, sparking violent protests by his angry supporters, who mainly attacked military installations. Khan has blamed his ouster on the United States and the powerful military, which has ruled Pakistan for half its history since independence from British colonial rule in 1947.

The United States, Sharif and the military have denied Khan's allegations.

The violence only subsided last year when the Supreme Court ordered Khan's release. However, he was rearrested in early August 2023 after a court sentenced him to three years in prison for corruption.

Khan has been acquitted in several cases in recent months related to last year's violence, but his bail was revoked this week in an ongoing case in the eastern city of Lahore.

On Friday, the Supreme Court ruled that Khan's party was wrongly denied at least 20 seats in parliament, a blow to the country's fragile governing coalition.

Khan's party had previously been excluded from a system that gives parties extra seats reserved for women and minorities in the National Assembly, the lower house of parliament.

Tarar, the information minister, also accused Khan on Monday of trying to damage diplomatic relations between Pakistan and the United States by alleging that his ouster as prime minister was a US-led plot carried out by the military and his rivals, including Sharif, who became prime minister after a February 8 election that Khan said was rigged.
