Donald Trump Picks JD Vance as Republican Vice President for 2024

Former President Donald Trump has chosen Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance as his running mate, placing a young ideological ally alongside him on the 2024 Republican ticket.
On Monday, Trump announced Vance as his running mate, writing on Truth Social that the Ohio Republican was “the best person to serve as vice president of the United States.”
The move ends months of speculation and sees Trump elevate to the top rank a 39-year-old senator whose roughly year-and-a-half tenure in the Senate saw him emerge as a staunch ideological ally of the former president.

“As Vice President, JD will continue to fight for our Constitution, support our troops, and do everything he can to help me MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Trump's campaign wasted no time in promoting the former president's pick, releasing a social media ad featuring a montage of Vance praising Trump.
“I’m proud to have been an ally of Donald Trump in Washington, D.C.,” Vance says in one of the ad’s clips.
The campaign is also raising money through the ad, saying he “always knew” he “needed” Vance by his side.
President Joe Biden's campaign released a statement on Vance's nomination as Trump's vice presidential pick, accusing Vance of being someone who will advance Trump's “extreme MAGA agenda.”
“Donald Trump chose JD Vance as his running mate because Vance will do what Mike Pence would not do on January 6th: bend over backward to enable Trump and his extreme MAGA agenda, even if it means breaking the law and regardless of the harm it causes to the American people,” Biden campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon wrote in a statement.

Vance rose to fame with his 2016 book “Hillbilly Elegy.” He went from being a “diehard Trump fan” to one of Trump's most vocal defenders in the span of eight years.
Vance was born in Middleton, Ohio, and served in the Marine Corps. He later attended Ohio State University and eventually graduated from Yale Law School.
He was a corporate lawyer and later worked in the technology industry as a venture capitalist.
In 2016, Vance published his memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy,” which tells his story of growing up poor in America’s Rust Belt and his childhood surrounded by violence and addiction.
Vance ultimately became an emissary between the media and Rust Belt residents during the 2016 election, discussing issues important to those with similar backgrounds to his.
During this period, Vance made clear his disdain for Trump, saying he was an “anti-Trump guy” in a 2016 interview with Charlie Rose.

In August 2016, he told ABC News that he didn't see Trump “offering many solutions.”
But Vance would eventually align himself with the former president, praising his tenure and apologizing for his attacks on him in a July 2021 interview with Fox News.
“I’ve been very open about the fact that I said those critical things, and I regret them, and I regret that I was wrong about this guy,” Vance said on Fox News in 2021.
His apology came just as Vance entered the race for Ohio's vacant Senate seat, which has become one of the most competitive Republican primaries of the 2022 election cycle. Trump endorsed Vance for the job, which helped him win both the primary and general election against Ohio Democrat Tim Scott.

As a senator, he notably responded to the train derailment in eastern Palestine, his home state. He also remained true to his conservative, hardline image, including opposing aid to Ukraine.
In 2024, Vance has been a reliable surrogate for Trump — appearing at campaign events, defending him in television appearances and helping the former president raise money for his campaign.
