Modi Adani, Ambani's remarks on Rahul Gandhi's black money are election propaganda, says Lokpal
Anti-corruption ombudsman Lokpal on Friday dismissed a complaint filed against Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his remarks that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi received black money from India's top industrialists, including Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani. Lokpal said PM Modi's remarks were “electioneering” aimed at cornering an opponent, and called out the complainant.
In its order, the anti-corruption body criticised the complainant, saying it was incomprehensible how the prime minister who made such a statement could be considered an “accused” in the case. It said the complainant's allegations against PM Modi were outlandish.
Lokpal also said that PM Modi's statement was like 'shadow boxing' and that he could be an informant or witness in any case but not an accused. He said there was no need to interfere in this case.
Lokpal said the complaint was baseless and based on unverifiable facts, adding that Prime Minister Modi's remarks were not facts but merely a hypothetical or speculative observation.
During the Lok Sabha campaign in Karimnagar, Telangana on May 8, Prime Minister Modi targeted Rahul Gandhi and said, “However, since the election dates have been announced, they (Rahul and other Congress leaders) have stopped even insulting Ambani and Adani. Why? I would like to ask theShehzade“(Congress) Prince: How much black money did they get from Adani and Ambani?”
“How much (funds) did the Congress receive from them for the (ongoing) elections? Have the currency notes reached the Congress? I feel there is something wrong here. The Congress should come out and clarify things to the people,” he added.
Following this, a complaint was filed seeking an inquiry into Prime Minister Modi's remarks against Rahul Gandhi.
Meanwhile, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticised the Lokpal for its judgment and wondered who would hold the prime minister accountable.
“Who will hold the self-proclaimed non-biological PM accountable for the web of deception he is weaving? We had demanded an ED and CBI probe into Mr Modi’s tempo declaration made on May 8, 2024. That demand still stands. Meanwhile, the Lokpal has certainly turned out to be a Lok (Kalyan Marg) Pal?” he tweeted.
