Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan says he is 'locked up like a terrorist' in prison

Islamabad: Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has claimed that he was being locked up like a “terrorist” and denied basic prisoner rights and human rights in a “death cell” in a maximum security prison.

The 71-year-old founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party made the remarks in a rare interview from behind bars with the British publication The Sunday Times, Dawn newspaper reported on Sunday.

I am locked in a death cell measuring 2.10 metres by 2.40 metres, usually reserved for terrorists to ensure they have no contact with anyone, he told the newspaper.

“I am in solitary confinement, with little space to move. I am under constant surveillance by security services, recorded 24/7, and denied basic prisoner and human rights, such as visitation rights,” he said.

The interview was conducted through his lawyers, because according to the article, he is not allowed to have a pencil and paper.

Khan has been imprisoned in Rawalpindi's high-security Adiala Jail for nearly a year after being convicted in three cases: the Toshakhana corruption case, the cipher case and the un-Islamic marriage case – in which his wife, Bushra Bibi, is also imprisoned.

He faces more than 200 cases and has been convicted in some of them.

Although the former cricketer-turned-politician was granted bail or his conviction was overturned, he has not been released.

Khan was arrested on August 5 last year after his conviction in the first Toshakhana corruption case filed by the Election Commission of Pakistan.

Since then, he has been kept in prison on various charges.

After quashing Khan's conviction in the Iddat (un-Islamic marriage) case earlier this month, the court ruled that he should be released from prison if he is not wanted in another case.

But hours later, he was arrested in another case in Toshakhana along with his wife Bushra, 49, and both remain in jail.

He frequently claims that he was treated poorly in prison, but authorities have so far rejected his claims and allegations.

Responding to reports of Khan's conditions, Information Minister Atta Tarar denied that he was being held on death row.

The Sharif family has endured harsh conditions, but Imran Khan enjoys presidential suites at Adiala Jail, with access to a gym, kitchen, walking gallery and luxurious meals, he told a news conference.

On Saturday, Khan's wife Bushra also expressed serious concerns about her husband's safety in Adiala jail, alleging that he was being held in inhumane conditions and was being fed contaminated food.

According to Bushra, Khan's life is in danger, given past incidents in which he was allegedly poisoned and shot.
