Jokowi says coconut commodities have potential to contribute to green economy
Joko Widodo (Jokowi), President of the Republic of Indonesia, said that coconut products have great potential to encourage green economic growth in Indonesia.
The President made this statement while opening the 51st International Coconut Conference and Exhibition (Cocotech) 2024 at the Westin Hotel, Surabaya, East Java (Jatim), Monday (22/7/2024).
“In the future, the green economy is an opportunity, a huge potential for our country, Indonesia,” Jokowi said.
The area of land under coconut cultivation in Indonesia reaches 3.8 million hectares. This figure makes Indonesia the second largest coconut producing country in Indonesia with a production of 2.8 million tons per year.
The large amount of production in the coconut sector is also accompanied by a high export value reaching USD 1.55 billion or IDR 25.1 trillion.
Coconut is particularly rich in potential. “We have an area of 3.8 million (hectares) of coconuts with a production of 2.8 million tonnes per year, it is very large,” he explained.
The President said that two Indonesian provinces have the potential to produce large quantities of coconuts, namely North Sulawesi and Riau provinces.
Our exports are also not a small amount of 1.55 billion US dollars, it is a significant figure and can be further increased if we are serious. “We want to take the issues related to the head seriously,” he said.
Besides coconuts, Jokowi said there are other products that also have the potential to develop the green economy. Such as chocolate, cocoa, coffee, pepper, vanilla and cloves.
For this reason, the former governor of DKI Jakarta said that the government now has the task of encouraging green economic growth through plantation products.
