Poll: Donald Trump loses election for first time in over a month

Former President Donald Trump loses a Reuters/Ipsos poll for the first time since May while Vice President Kamala Harris gains ground.
Harris emerged as the Democratic frontrunner after President Joe Biden announced Sunday that he was withdrawing from the race, following weeks of pressure from prominent party leaders. Democrats quickly rallied around Harris, who appears to have enough delegates to win the party's nomination at the Democratic National Convention in August.
Trump has been ahead of Harris and Biden in polls for months, but Democrats say Harris will be able to mount a strong campaign in key states in the coming months, arguing that past polls may not be indicative of her potential as a presidential candidate.
A Reuters/Ipsos poll released Tuesday shows Harris now leading Trump by two percentage points, 44% to 42%. Trump led every other Reuters poll in June and July, against Biden and Harris.

When independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was included in the poll, Harris' lead grew to four points, with 42% of respondents supporting her compared to 38% supporting Trump and 8% supporting Kennedy, Reuters reported.
The poll was conducted July 21-22, after Biden announced he was withdrawing from the race, among 1,241 U.S. adults, according to Reuters.
For nearly two months, Trump had not trailed in a Reuters poll. A May 31 Reuters poll found Biden and Trump tied among all respondents, while Biden led by two points (41% to 39%) among registered voters.
Meanwhile, a Reuters poll conducted July 15-16 found Harris and Trump tied, each with 44% of the vote. A poll conducted July 1-2 found Trump with a one-point lead over the vice president (39% to 38%). The same poll showed Trump and Biden tied, each with 36% of the vote among all respondents.
Another poll shows support for Harris growing
Elsewhere, a YouGov/Yahoo News poll released Tuesday also showed Harris gaining ground.
The poll, conducted among 1,743 adults from July 19 to 22, found Harris and Trump tied, with each receiving the support of 46% of respondents. It’s worth noting that part of this poll was conducted before Biden ended his campaign.
A YouGov/Yahoo News poll of 1,176 registered voters conducted from June 28 to July 1 found Trump with a two-point lead, 47 percent to 45 percent.
Newsweek reached out to Harris' spokesperson and the Trump campaign for comment via email.
Harris launched her campaign Monday, visiting her Wilmington, Delaware, headquarters, where she addressed campaign issues such as reproductive rights, which Democrats see as a winning issue heading into November.
On Tuesday, Harris traveled to Wisconsin, a key battleground state. She is set to be joined by Wisconsin Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin, who is seeking reelection and notably did not accompany Biden on a visit to the state in early July.
“I’m thrilled to be back in Wisconsin to talk about what’s at stake in this election and how we defeat Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda,” Harris wrote in a post on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.
Meanwhile, Republicans are seeking to step up their attacks on Harris, criticizing her record on immigration and seeking to link her record to that of Biden, who has faced popularity struggles with Americans.
