Suspected overheating at Trump rally in Charlotte prompts emergency calls

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – First responders responded to several heat-related emergency calls at Bojangles Coliseum Wednesday ahead of former President Donald Trump's rally.

Overheating appears to have been a problem for some, as Trump supporters packed into the July 24 rally venue in high temperatures. Paramedics reportedly responded to eight heat-related emergency calls at the rally site. Two of those cases involved people being rushed to the hospital with minor injuries, authorities said.

Wednesday's highs were around 90 degrees, and the heat was more intense because of humidity and sunshine.

Bojangles Coliseum was packed with supporters hours before Trump's speech, scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. You can watch live on our site here.

Queues of supporters were visible around the venue, with some people reporting being turned away due to limited seating.

Around 2 p.m., Bojangles' entertainment complex announced that all designated parking lots were at full capacity.

The interest in Trump's rally has also caused significant traffic congestion for motorists around Charlotte, particularly on and near Independence Boulevard, near the rally site. Officials expect the congestion to continue through the evening.

Additional delays are expected between 4 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. around Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

Just a week ago, Trump narrowly escaped an assassin's bullet while he was campaigning in Pennsylvania. Many questions have been raised about the safety of people who are supposed to have the highest level of security.

The Secret Service director resigned Tuesday after a grueling hearing on the issue. Promises of increased security mean people attending Wednesday's rally will see changes, even if they have attended several such events before.

WBTV security expert Karl De La Guerra expects all aspects of security to be heightened Wednesday.

“I think we're going to see an increase in security personnel,” Guerra said. Not just from the Secret Service, but from local agencies as well.

While full security details are not being released, local police said, CMPD and the Secret Service have a strong partnership and are working together to provide a safe experience for the former president and all attendees.
