Russian President Vladimir Putin meets Syrian President Assad in Moscow

Vladimir Putin met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Moscow to discuss what the Russian leader described as an “escalation” in the Middle East, television footage showed Thursday.
Wednesday night's meeting comes at a time when Russia, which saved Assad's government with its military intervention in 2015 during a civil war, could serve as a mediator to defuse tensions between Syria and Turkey.
The first meeting between the two men since last March comes after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan raised the possibility of a meeting between the three leaders in an attempt to normalise relations between Ankara and Damascus.
“We have now reached a point where as soon as Bashar al-Assad takes a step towards improving relations with Turkey, we will show him the same approach,” Erdogan said.
Turkey initially aimed to topple the Assad regime when the Syrian conflict erupted with the violent crackdown on peaceful protesters in 2011 and has backed rebels calling for his ouster.
But more recently, Ankara has focused its efforts on preventing the opening of what Erdogan called in 2019 a “terrorist corridor” in northern Syria.
Erdogan has long said he may reconsider his relationship with Assad as his government struggles to ensure the safe and voluntary return of Syrian refugees.
Turkey has launched a series of offensives in Syria since 2016 targeting Kurdish militias, Islamic State jihadists and forces loyal to Assad.
Pro-Turkish forces in Syria now control two large swathes of territory along the border.
