Russia among world's most capable countries: PM Modi speeds up delivery of 120 ultra-long-range surface-to-air missiles; to give edge over Pakistan
THE 40N6 missiles are designed to strike airborne positions, bombers and hypersonic and ballistic cruise missiles, according to an ET report. The decision to acquire these long-range missiles was taken following the Balakot airstrikewhich took place on February 26, 2019.
During this operation, Indian Mirage 2000 fighter jets crossed the Line of Control and “incinerated the Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist camp in Balakot, Pakistan”. This airstrike was carried out in response to the Pulwama attack.
Several factors, including the Covid-19 pandemic and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, may have contributed to the delay in the delivery of these missiles. However, Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Moscow provided the political impetus to expedite the delivery of the pending defence supplies, including the two remaining S-400 systems from Russia.

According to some sources, the surface-to-air missiles supplied by Russia are considered among the most advanced in the world, with a range of around 400 kilometers.
An expert pointed out that Russia has always responded to India's defence needs during critical periods, and acquiring these missiles is crucial to maintain an edge over Pakistan.
In 2019, India and Russia signed a deal to acquire five squadrons of the advanced air defense system, capable of engaging targets at a range of up to 400 kilometers.
So far, Russia has supplied three such air defence systems to India, which have been operationalised and deployed along the country's borders with China and Pakistan.
Initially, the delivery of the remaining two squadrons was to be completed by 2024. However, delays have occurred due to Russia's internal problems and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
