When will the crumbling King's Lynn hospital be rebuilt?
Plans to rebuild a crumbling hospital have suffered a setback after the new health secretary said building 40 new hospitals by 2030 was “not feasible in that timeframe”.
The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King's Lynn, Norfolk, was built from precast concrete planks and is supported by props. Last year plans were agreed for its reconstruction.
Wes Streeting, the health and social care secretary, told parliament that hospitals built using reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete, or Raac, were “high on my list of priorities”, but added that he was “not prepared to offer people false hope about the speed of this construction”.
The Queen Elizabeth Hospital declined to comment.
Demolition work on the hospital's Inspire Centreto make way for a multi-storey car park, began in June 2023 – but progress has been slow.
Boris Johnson's Conservatives had pledged to build 40 new hospitals by 2030, and in the general election Labour said it planned to rebuild the Queen Elizabeth by the same deadline.
Speaking in the House of Commons, re-elected Conservative MP for North West Norfolk, James Wild, asked Mr Streeting whether he would “honour that promise… and approve the business case submitted by the trust for the new multi-storey car park, which is a key project for the new hospital that we need by 2030.”
Mr Streeting said: “Hospitals using reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete are at the top of my priority list.”
But he added [the Conservatives] “There was a local prime minister in that hospital and they did nothing when they had the chance.”
James Paget Hospital in Great Yarmouth was should also be replaced by a new site by 2030and has been contacted for comment.
A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) said: “The NHS is broken, and nowhere is this more evident than in the state of some of our crumbling hospitals.”
“The Health and Social Care Secretary has called for an urgent report on the extent to which the new hospital programme is funded and a realistic timetable for its implementation.
“He will look at this carefully and then report back to patients, clinicians and local communities.”

Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless.
