Imran denounces the label of 'digital terrorism' attached to 'social media novices' – Journal

He draws parallels between the current situation and that of 1971; he says Gandapur has been tasked with leading a rally in Islamabad for genuine freedom. PTI leaders say the symbolic hunger strike will continue till the former prime minister is released

KARACHI: PTI founder Imran Khan on Wednesday regretted the manner in which some individuals without any understanding of social media were assigning digital terrorism labels, Dawn.com reported.

The remarks by the jailed leaders come after the ISPR Director General's press conference earlier this week, where Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif had said that digital terrorists use tools like mobile phones, computers, lies and propaganda to impose their will on society, much like terrorists.

A message posted Wednesday on Imran Khan's official account, which he cannot access personally while he is in jail, read: “The nation is being hated by calling the entire Pakistani nation terrorists. A few people living in the 70s and completely ignorant of the workings of social media are spreading the term digital terrorism.”

The tweet warned that if all those who supported his party were considered digital terrorists, a rift would be created between the army and the people.

Ninety percent of the people support PTI, 90 percent of the people voted in favour of PTI, he said, adding that people inciting hatred should be aware of their actions.

The same thing happened in 1971. On March 25, when Yahya Khan carried out an operation against a large number of people in Dhaka, the results were not good for the country, he stressed. If the majority of the population is still labeled as terrorists today, it will have dangerous consequences for the country, he warned.

The PTI leader said demanding supremacy of the Constitution and genuine freedom was not treason.

He said that the ridiculous accusations against party leaders and workers meant that they were working perfectly peacefully and you started using fascist tactics against them when you could not control them peacefully.

Mr Khan said Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur had been ordered to lead a rally in Islamabad.

The whole nation should [be] “I am ready to fully participate in the rally to achieve real freedom against the oppressive and fascist system that prevails in the country,” he said.

Responding to media reports that the former prime minister had admitted to calling for a protest outside the GHQ if he was arrested, Mr Khan said: A narrative has been created in the media as part of a specific agenda that I incited people to protest by going to the GHQ, when in fact there is no instance of violent protest in the history of the PTI spanning almost three decades.

He said that the element of violence was not part of the political formation of PTI workers. PTI believes in political, constitutional and legal struggle, he added.

Hunger-strike

Meanwhile, the PTI announced that it would continue a symbolic hunger strike outside Parliament until Imran Khan is released and his stolen mandate is restored.

The hunger strikers' camp was set up near Gate 1 of the Parliament building.

Addressing the gathering, former National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser said that the PTI was struggling to uphold the constitution. He demanded the release of the party's founding chairman and women working in it.

Leader of Opposition in the Senate Shibli Faraz alleged that the constitution had been suspended and freedom of expression had been curtailed in the country, adding that citizens were not able to exercise their fundamental rights. He said the PTI's mandate had been stolen and an incompetent group had been imposed on the masses.

The party will hold a nationwide protest on Friday (tomorrow), he announced.

Opposition leader in the National Assembly Omar Ayub Khan said the hunger strike camp would continue till Imran Khan is released.

He said that PTI was the only party that stood for the rights and issues of the people.

Referring to the federal cabinet meeting held earlier in the day under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, he said the facial expressions of the ministers during the meeting clearly showed that they were hopeless and helpless.

Speaking to reporters about the rising electricity bills, he said the PML-N government had signed agreements with the independent power producers which have now become like a sword threatening the country.
