Politics News: Former Tory minister launches leadership campaign; poll reveals likely frontrunners | Politics News
Former Home Secretary Robert Jenrick gives a speech as part of his campaign to lead the Conservative Party.
Before he spoke, former Common Sense Minister Esther McVey introduced him.
She repeatedly highlighted Labour's “betrayal” of various groups such as pensioners and young people, before praising Mr Jenrick's ability to communicate and speak in public.
Arriving on stage, Mr Jenrick praised those who helped him retain his seat during the general election campaign, before saying he wanted to breathe “new life” into the party.
This involves members choosing candidates for elections and becoming a “mass” party.
Mr Jenrick believes young people can be persuaded to become Conservatives, but this requires being supportive of housebuilding.
He says he will tell the party some “hard truths” during the campaign, before praising the Cameron era for schools reform and public finances.
Mr Jenrick also congratulated Boris Johnson for “getting” Brexit done.
He claims the Conservatives lost the election because they broke their promise to the public to cut immigration – and says that's why he resigned from cabinet last year.
As Home Secretary, Mr Jenrick was not a full member of the cabinet.
He says he wants to embrace the catch-up agenda and get public services working properly again – criticising money being pumped into areas like the NHS without any improvements.
Mr Jenrick says fears that Labour would attack his intentions led the Conservative government to fail to make the tough choices that needed to be made.
He jokes that the “lions” on the front lines have been abandoned by the “donkeys” in the back office.
On migration, the former Home Secretary says the state has failed to secure the country's borders and that high migration rates are bad for the economy – and he concludes that the system is contributing to the UK's “national decline”.
He says the party must “change a lot” to win back and recapture voters it has lost to both camps.
Mr Jenrick says the Conservatives must evolve according to the party's “best traditions and values”, including generosity of spirit, respect for institutions and others, and a desire for national unity, not division.
He concludes by saying that he believes the Conservatives can win the next election.

Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily.
