Kamala Harris rejects Donald Trump's proposal to move presidential debate

Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has rejected Republican rival Donald Trump's offer to move the presidential debate to Fox News Channel, media reported Sunday.

Donald Trump, 78, and President Joe Biden, then running for the White House, agreed in May to participate in two presidential debates. The first was held in June, on CNN, and the second, on ABC News, was scheduled for September 10.

Biden withdrew from the race last month, after which Vice President Harris, who is of Indian and African descent, was declared the ruling Democratic Party's 2024 presidential nominee after winning enough votes among Democratic delegates in a virtual roll call.

On Saturday, Trump said he had accepted an offer from Fox News to host a debate with Vice President Harris on September 4, a departure from the original plan, CBS News reported.

“I have agreed with FoxNews to debate Kamala Harris on Wednesday, September 4. The debate was originally scheduled against Sleepy Joe Biden on ABC, but was canceled because Biden will no longer be a participant, and I am in litigation against ABC Network and George Slopadopoulos, creating a conflict of interest,” he said.

Meanwhile, Harris took to X to decline Trump's debate offer on Fox News.

“It’s interesting how ‘anytime, anywhere’ becomes ‘a specific moment, a specific safe space.’ I’ll be there on September 10, as he agreed. I hope to see him there,” Harris said.

The Harris campaign also said it would stick to the original plan for a debate on ABC News.

According to the report, “Donald Trump is scared” and hopes Fox News will “get him out of this” by refusing the debate he had already agreed to with ABC News.

“He needs to stop playing games and show up to the debate he's already committed to on September 10,” Michael Tyler, Harris' campaign communications director, was quoted as saying by the report.

“The vice president will be there in some capacity to take advantage of the opportunity to address a national audience in prime time,” Tyler said, adding that the campaign is open to discussing new debates, but only after the one both campaigns have already agreed to hold takes place.

Last month, Harris challenged Trump to a debate, pushing him to say everything he had to say “to her face.”

Harris will face Trump in the November 5 general election.
