Imran Khan has said he will apologise for the May 9 riots if any member of his party is found guilty of violence.

Islamabad, Aug 7 (PTI) Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday said he would apologise for the May 9, 2018 riots if any member of his party was found guilty of participating in the violence. Speaking to reporters in Adiala Jail, the 71-year-old founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf demanded that the CCTV footage of the May 9, 2018 riots be made public to ascertain the real culprits of the riots. “If any member of PTI is found guilty of participating in the May 9 events, I will apologise, expel him from the party and ensure that he is punished,” he said in an informal conversation. Khan, however, demanded in the same tone that everyone be held accountable for violating the law. “I was dragged by the rangers, but it seems there is no respect for the most popular personality of Pakistan, both nationally and internationally. Don’t I also deserve an apology?” Khan said his party members were victims of injustice, with thousands of them imprisoned. Many were not allowed to participate in the elections and their party was banned. “They are victims of the May 9 incident and are demanding justice,” he said. Khan said he had also contacted the chief justice, pointing out the human rights violations, and noted that their request had not been heard. He reiterated that the PTI would not negotiate with the government, which came to power through the February 8 election fraud. He demanded that an apology also come from those who committed mistakes. The PTI founder also demanded that his name be included along with those of Nawaz Sharif, Asif Ali Zardari and Shehbaz Sharif on the no-fly list, apparently to face accountability. His statement came after army spokesman Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry on Monday reiterated that the army was firm that those involved in the violent protests on May 9 would apologise and be brought to justice. The May 9 riots left more than 100 people dead. The violence began after Pakistan Rangers arrested Khan from the premises of the Islamabad High Court in a corruption case. PTI supporters reportedly targeted civilians and military installations, including the residence of the Pakistan Army's IV Corps commander in Lahore, the headquarters in Rawalpindi, across the country after Khan's arrest.
