Erdogan calls Maduro in Venezuela after disputed elections, urges dialogue
ANKARA Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday called for dialogue in Venezuela, in a first call to Nicolas Maduro since the disputed elections.
Erdogan did not congratulate Maduro, who claimed victory for a third term despite widespread protests and accusations of fraud and lack of transparency from international observers.
Turkey will continue to support the dialogue process in Venezuela, conveying its wishes for peace, prosperity and well-being to the Venezuelan people, the Turkish report of the Erdogan-Maduro call said.
Erdogan became one of the few leaders to call the Venezuelan president, who is isolated from the world. But unlike Russian President Vladimir Putin, who rushed to celebrate Maduro’s disputed victory immediately after the election, Erdogan did not send a congratulatory message, according to a Turkish account of the call.
The outcome of Venezuela’s July 28 presidential election remains in dispute between Maduro and his opposition rival, Edmundo Gonzalez, after both claimed victory. Venezuela’s electoral authority declared Maduro the winner, but Western capitals and international election observers have cast doubt on the integrity of the results. Maduro has ordered the Supreme Court, which he controls, to conduct an audit but has refrained from releasing data proving his alleged victory.
Erdogan and Maduro also discussed bilateral relations as well as Israel's war in Gaza, the statement said.
Ankara opposes the economic sanctions imposed by the United States on Venezuela, but refrains from publicly aligning itself with either side in the conflict between the Venezuelan government and opposition parties backed by Western capitals. The South American country is one of Turkey's largest trading partners in the Latin American region. Trade volume between the two countries exceeded $1 billion last year, according to official Turkish data.
Erdogan and the embattled Venezuelan leader also have close personal ties. Maduro attended Erdogan’s inauguration ceremony in June 2023 after the Turkish president was re-elected in May 2023 presidential elections. Erdogan has also visited the South American country several times during his more than two decades in power, most recently in 2018.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met with Maduro as well as his Venezuelan counterpart, Yvan Gil, during his visit to the country in February.
Gil, for his part, has become one of the most frequent high-ranking diplomats to visit Turkey in the past two years. Most recently, he was in Ankara in May to attend a meeting of the joint cooperation council between the two countries with Fidan.
