PM Modi directs IOA chairman PT Usha to take necessary action: Sports Minister on Vinesh Phogats' disqualification | India News
Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Wednesday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha to take necessary action regarding the wrestler. Vinesh Phogat disqualified from Paris 2024 Olympics.
Addressing the Lok Sabha, Mandaviya said, “IOA President PT Usha has ordered Prime Minister Modi will take appropriate action. The IOA expressed its disagreement with United World Wrestling on this matter.
Phogat was disqualified from the women's 50kg wrestling final at the 2024 Paris Olympics after weighing 100 grams overweight in the morning.
“She was the first Indian woman to reach the final of women's wrestling at the Olympics,” Mandaviya said, adding that the government provided all possible assistance to the wrestler for her preparation.
Earlier in the day, when the news of Phogat's disqualification broke, opposition MPs protested in the House during the Zero Hour demanding a statement from the government on the issue. Some MPs also thronged the Well of the House raising slogans demanding a response from the Sports Minister. Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal intervened and said the minister would make a statement later in the House on the issue.
