Jokowi Says Downstream Nickel Revenue Reaches IDR 510 T

NIKEL.CO.ID, JAKARTA- President of the Republic of Indonesia (RI) Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said that the value of downstream nickel exports has increased to IDR 510 trillion.

“As Coordinating Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said, the value of our nickel exports is now $34 billion, from the previous $33 trillion, it has increased to around IDR 510 trillion,” President Jokowi said at the inauguration of the lithium battery anode materials factory owned by PT Indonesia BTR New Energy Material in Kendal, East Java.

Quoted via CNBC Indonesia, Thursday (8/8/2024), Jokowi admitted that his policy regarding the downstream program he launched, including the ban on nickel ore exports, has not received much positive response from some parties. Among other things, the emergence of a lawsuit from the European Union (EU) at the World Trade Organization (WTO).

“And we lost. But I say this country is a sovereign country, national interests are everything to us. “No one can dictate the law to us,” Jokowi explained.

Jokowi believes that the most important thing in this case is that the industry is growing as a large EV (electric vehicle) ecosystem has developed. The dream of creating a strong and integrated EV ecosystem is beginning to come true one by one.

“Nickel and derivatives smelters in Morowali, Weda Bay and elsewhere have started operating. “Secondly, in August and September, Freeport and Amman Mineral smelters in Sumbawa and Gresik will also start production,” Jokowi explained.

Third, bauxite production trials in Mempawah, West Kalimantan, are expected to start next month.

“If everything is done, the ecosystem will be built, we will be able to enter the global supply chain which will bring great added value in terms of recruitment, workforce and our economic structure,”

In addition, he also inaugurated the lithium battery anode material factory owned by PT Indonesia BTR New Energy Material, in Kendal, East Java, Wednesday (7/7/2024).
