Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani on Thursday called for more international efforts to prevent the escalation of the Middle East conflict.
The joint call came as the emir, whose country has been a key mediator between Israel and Hamas, made a brief visit to Ankara to discuss the crisis following last week's assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. Hamas and Iran have blamed Israel.
“President Erdogan said that Israel is trying to increase tension in the region with its attacks on Palestinian territory and Lebanon, and that the international community must take effective measures to end the Israeli aggression, which has intensified in recent days,” a statement released by Erdogan's office said.
Until October 7, when Hamas launched its attack on Israel, Haniyeh divided his time between Qatar and Turkey.
Erdogan added that with the assassination of the Hamas leader, “Israel has once again demonstrated that it has no intention of achieving a ceasefire.”
The Hamas attack on October 7, which triggered the Gaza war, left 1,198 dead, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures.
Israel's military campaign in Gaza has killed at least 39,699 people, according to the Hamas-controlled territory's health ministry, which does not provide details on civilian and militant deaths.
