President Joko Widodo orders immediate mass tests on coronaviruses in Indonesia
The Indonesian government appears poised to adopt an even more proactive strategy in its battle against COVID-19, with President Joko Widodo now asking the cabinet to prepare for mass tests for the coronavirus in the country.
At a cabinet meeting this morning, President Jokowi asked the Ministry of Health to immediately make available rapid test kits for the new coronavirus, as well as places where the majority of Indonesians can be tested.
Immediately perform rapid tests on a much more massive scale, said Jokowi, as cited by Kompas.
It is for the early detection of people with COVID-19.
Jokowi also calls on public hospitals, state-owned enterprises, the military, the police and private companies to speed up the process of detecting coronaviruses in the country.
No clear plan for the Jokowis plan has been made public.
Yesterday, Achmad Yurianto, Indonesian spokesperson for COVID-19 issues, said that the Ministry of Health was developing a rapid COVID-19 test method which, instead of involving a nasal swab, would involve a analysis of blood samples.
Such a method, said Achmad, would be easier to apply and could be applied in most hospitals in Indonesia. The spokesperson did not give more details on the rapid test method.
Mass testing and social distancing are among the strategies adopted by governments around the world to neutralize COVID-19.
