Saudi, Turkish leaders call for pressure on Israel to end Gaza war

Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan discussed the ongoing Israeli war in the Gaza Strip in a phone call on Sunday.
According to the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the Saudi prince stressed the kingdom's keenness to unify Arab and Islamic efforts to support the brotherly Palestinian people in the face of the brutal aggression to which they are subjected by the Israeli occupation forces.
Prince Mohammed also called for the need to intensify efforts to end Israeli attacks against the Palestinian people.
Erdogan echoed similar comments in the phone call, calling on the international community to exert more pressure on Israel to end its actions in the Palestinian territories, particularly the Gaza Strip, the Turkish presidential communications directorate said in a statement.
The Turkish leader also stressed the need for joint action by Islamic countries to end Israeli attacks and human rights violations, while calling for the need to achieve a lasting ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
Israel launched a major air and ground campaign against Gaza in retaliation for Hamas's cross-border assault on October 7, in which the group's militants killed nearly 1,200 people and took more than 240 hostage.
Since then, the Israeli offensive has killed more than 40,000 Palestinians, according to the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry, and displaced nearly 1.9 million others, according to United Nations figures.
The war has also created what the UN describes as the world's worst humanitarian crisis. Food and medicine have become scarce in the enclave, with aid deliveries hampered by the fighting. The situation has also led to the spread of diseases, most recently polio.
The UN launched a polio vaccination campaign in central Gaza on Sunday, after Hamas and Israel agreed to a brief pause in their fighting earlier this week. Fighting will be suspended for at least eight hours for three consecutive days.
Meanwhile, negotiations mediated by the United States, Egypt and Qatar for a ceasefire and an agreement on the hostage-taking have stalled.
Turkey has repeatedly called for an end to hostilities in Gaza since last October. Most recently, Erdogan threatened to enter Israel in support of the Palestinians if the latter continued its war in the enclave.
“We have to be very strong so that Israel cannot do these ridiculous things to Palestine. Just like we entered Karabakh, just like we entered Libya, we could do the same thing,” Erdogan said at a meeting of his ruling AKP party in his hometown of Rize late last month.
Saudi Arabia has also made similar calls for a ceasefire, while stressing its support for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Before the war between Israel and Hamas broke out on October 7, Washington was pushing for Saudi Arabia to join the 2020 Abraham Accords, under which the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain normalized relations with Israel.
But since the start of the war, Saudi officials have stressed the need to achieve Israeli-Palestinian peace and guarantee Palestinian rights before moving toward a normalization deal.
Ankara and Riyadh have been at loggerheads since the assassination of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October 2018 and tensions over the Muslim Brotherhood movement. However, since Erdogan's re-election in May 2023, relations have been reset and the two countries have deepened their political and economic ties.
