A Monday lecture by Martin Lavika, assistant professor in the Department of Asian Studies at Palack University in Olomouc, Czech Republic.
China’s human rights record, particularly on religious freedom, has been widely criticized. Despite this, the number of religious adherents has continued to grow, presenting both challenges and opportunities for the Chinese government. On the one hand, the growth of the religious population has the potential to destabilize the political order. On the other, it offers a means to influence a substantial portion of the population in favor of the socialist system and the Communist Party. This presentation will examine the government’s religious policy through an analysis of recent state and Party documents. It will show that the government’s strategy has not changed much since the Party’s 1982 directive, Document 19, but has intensified under the current leadership, which is actively engaging in the bureaucratization of religion in China.
Martin Lavika Assistant Professor at the Department of Asian Studies at Palack University in Olomouc, he teaches modern Chinese history, Taiwanese history and Chinese politics. His research focuses on the socio-legal aspects of ethnic politics, religious freedoms and the rule of law in China. He is a visiting scholar at the Centre for East and Southeast Asian Studies at Lund University, where he is working on a two-year project on the rule of law in China.
