Anti-Trump planes fly over college football stadiums during DNC protest

College football fans traveling to several universities this weekend were in for a surprise when planes carrying messages about the 2024 election flew over their respective parking lots and stadiums.

On Saturday, the second week of the 2024 college football season, planes carrying banners with messages specific to three universities flew overhead, courtesy of the Democratic National Committee.

Four hours before kickoff, aerial messages linking Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and his running mate J.D. Vance to the controversial set of conservative policy proposals called Project 2025 flew over the University of Michigan’s Michigan Stadium and Penn State’s Beaver Stadium, with a plane scheduled to fly over the University of Wisconsin’s Camp Randall Stadium later in the day. A fourth plane was scheduled to fly over the University of Georgia’s Sanford Stadium but was grounded Saturday morning due to weather.

The messages included: “JD Vance <3 Ohio State + Project 2025”; “Bulldogs: Defeat Trump, Fire Project 2025”; “Penn St: Defeat Trump, Fire Project 2025”; “Jump Around! Defeat Trump + Project 2025.”

The stunt was meant to remind students and football fans that voting for Trump means “losing the game because of his dangerous and extreme plans, Project 2025,” said the campaign of Trump's opponent, Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris.

“It’s college football Saturday and fans are ready to crush the competition and take down Project 2025, which would give Trump unprecedented power, allow him to ban abortion nationwide, allow the government to monitor pregnancies and provide tax breaks to billionaires,” DNC deputy communications director Abhi Rahman said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “The DNC is reaching voters where they are in key swing states across the country by flying Project 2025 banners over the Big House in Michigan, Sanford Stadium in Georgia, Beaver Stadium at Penn State and Camp Randall Stadium in Wisconsin.”

“These banners carry a message that resonates with fans and reminds them that the most important contest is yet to come in November,” Rahman continued. “The contrast in this election couldn’t be clearer, and we have a winning strategy: Tackle Project 2025, pause at the goal line and run 99 yards in the other direction toward a more just and equal America for all.”

Also known as the 2025 Presidential Transition Plan, the conservative Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 initiative, released in 2023, outlines a series of conservative and right-wing policies and is billed as “a policy agenda, personnel, training, and 180-day plan” to be implemented “on day one” by the next Republican president. Harris’ campaign and several speakers spoke in support of the proposal at the August DNC and have since made the 900-page plan their primary anti-GOP attack.

“Have you ever seen a document that could kill a small animal and democracy at the same time? This is it,” said Saturday Night Live comedian and DNC spokesman Kenan Thompson as he took the stage on the third night of the convention this summer. During his time on stage, he took calls from voters and informed them of the current rights they stood to lose under the 2025 project, including protections for LGBTQ+ Americans. “I worry that this is going back to the Stone Age.”

Several other DNC speakers, including Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) and vice presidential candidate Tim Walz, also criticized the plan.

The next day, Trump told Fox News that he had “no idea” about Project 25. “They know I had nothing to do with it,” he said on Fox & Friends. “A group of people got together, they came up with conservative values, very conservative values. In some cases, maybe they crossed the line, maybe they didn’t. I have no idea what Project 25 is.”

Trump spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt told the New York Times: “The truth is that President Trump has repeatedly said that Project 2025 has nothing to do with his campaign.”
