Ajit Doval to visit Moscow as part of PM Modi's efforts to broker peace between Russia and Ukraine
National Security Advisor Ajit Doval is expected to visit Moscow this week for talks focused on resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict, sources said. The visit follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent trips to Russia in July and Ukraine in August, where he met Presidents Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky, respectively.
Shortly after his trip to Ukraine and meeting with President Zelensky, Prime Minister Modi spoke to President Putin on August 27. A Russian Embassy statement then said that Prime Minister Modi had briefed President Putin on his visit to Kiev and had underlined India's commitment to reach a settlement through political and diplomatic means.
According to sources, it was during this phone call that the leaders decided that NSA representative Doval would travel to Moscow for peace negotiations. “President Putin expressed his principled assessment of the destructive policies of the Kiev authorities and their Western patrons, and then outlined Russia's approaches to resolving this conflict,” the Russian embassy said about the phone call.
The Prime Minister's Office said the two leaders exchanged views on the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. “The Prime Minister shared lessons learned from his recent visit to Ukraine. He stressed the importance of dialogue and diplomacy as well as sincere and practical engagement between all stakeholders to achieve a lasting and peaceful resolution of the conflict,” the Prime Minister's Office said in a statement.
The Prime Minister reiterated India's strong commitment to support a “speedy, lasting and peaceful resolution of the conflict” on his official Twitter account.
Doval's visit, however, comes as part of the BRICS NSA meeting to be held this week, ahead of the annual summit in Kazan. The meeting will bring together top security officials from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, as well as new members Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, Egypt and Ethiopia. Doval is also expected to hold bilateral talks with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi.
The trip to Moscow this week is also said to be an attempt to reach a peaceful resolution between warring neighbors Russia and Ukraine.
Other world leaders also believe that India can play a key role in finding a solution to the Ukraine conflict. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said that countries like India and China can play a role in resolving the conflict in Ukraine.
Her remarks, made at the Ambrosetti Forum in the northern Italian town of Cernobbio on Saturday – where she also met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who is visiting Russia – came less than 48 hours after Russian President Putin also highlighted India's efforts to resolve the ongoing crisis in the region.
On Thursday, during his speech at the 9th Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Putin mentioned India's role in providing a “helping hand” in resolving this problem.
“We respect our friends and partners who, I believe, are sincerely interested in addressing and resolving all issues related to the conflict (with Ukraine). China, Brazil, India… I am in contact with my partners and I have no doubt that the leaders of these countries, with which we have trusting relations, will be interested in providing us with assistance,” Putin said.
