Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan says he will not compromise after serving 400 days in jail

Lahore: Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan on Sunday served 400 days in jail, vowing that he was ready to spend his entire life in prison but would not compromise in his fight for “Haqiqi Azadi (true freedom)”.

The 71-year-old former cricketer-turned-politician's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party held a rally in Islamabad on Sunday to press for his release from prison.

Khan was arrested on August 5 after being convicted in the first Toshakhana corruption case filed by the Election Commission of Pakistan. Since then, he has been jailed in connection with different cases.

Government ministers say Khan's release is linked to his unconditional apology for the riots in which PTI workers allegedly attacked state and military installations. Khan, however, has demanded the setting up of a judicial commission to investigate the May 9 violence.

Today, Imran Khan has spent 400 days in jail but the powers that be could not break his resolve to support Haqiqi Azadi. The entire nation is behind him and he will be released from jail soon, PTI chief Asghar Gujjar said on Sunday.

Gujjar told PTI that today's historic rally in Islamabad would be an eye-opener for the fake Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government which could no longer hold Khan.

Last week, at a press conference during a hearing at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, Khan said he “will remain in prison for the rest of my life but will not reach an agreement for my freedom. I will not compromise on Haqiqi Azadi's struggle.”

A few days ago, Khan wrote on his X account that he was being held in deplorable conditions. He said he was being held in solitary confinement and was spending 21 hours a day in his cell.

“My cell is hot like an oven because of the weather, but I have never complained, I have never said that I am suffering. I have to go to a separate room to wash myself. I have just one complaint, though. I am not allowed to talk to my children, although it is my legal right. They (the illegal government) are lying on the floor of Parliament that I have been given five-star facilities. I have the same facilities as a death row inmate,” Khan said.

He said he felt like he was under the charge of a martial law administrator. “I have not spent a single day in the prison hospital. Nawaz Sharif, Shehbaz Sharif and Asif Zardari have been given air-conditioned rooms with private bathrooms. One of the prisoners cooks for me, but I have never complained,” he said.

“Only three visitors are allowed to meet me per week, while Nawaz Sharif met 40 people (when he was in jail). It was an open day for him. Nawaz Sharif even used to talk to journalists in the privacy of his room. I send the names of six leaders of my party every week, and only three of them are allowed to meet me for barely 30 minutes. I have so many cases against me and yet I am allowed to meet only six lawyers,” he added.
