No one can stop them: Pakistani police clash with PTI workers demanding Imran Khan's release; over 20 injured

Members of Imran Khan's party marched en masse to the suburbs of Islamabad to demand his release.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party workers gathered in the suburbs of Islamabad on Sunday demanding immediate release of party chief Imran Khan.

They held a huge jalsa demanding the release of Pakistan's former prime minister, who is still imprisoned for corruption.

Police fired tear gas shells at the crowd to disperse them. The Islamabad administration called in paramilitary forces to control the situation and end the clashes.

Sources speaking to CNN-News18 said that 20 people, including PTI workers and police personnel including the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Islamabad, were injured in the clashes.

Imran was due to be released from prison after a district and sessions court accepted appeals against his conviction in the Iddat case.

However, soon after, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) arrested him in a new Toshakhana case.

His sentences in the previous Toshakhana cases had already been suspended and he was acquitted by the Islamabad High Court (IHC) in the encryption case.

Sources speaking to CNN-News18 said the crackdown took place after 7pm on Sunday evening.

The response to the call for Imran Khan’s release has been overwhelming. The paranoid generals have tried to intervene, intimidate and block the flow of human traffic but they are junoonis. PTI leaders Hammad Azhar and Ali Muhammad Khan along with other party leaders addressed the crowd demanding Imran Khan's release before the clashes took place.

Police said the local administration had set a specific time limit for the rally. However, when the rally exceeded the allotted time, police attempted to disperse the protesters.

The rally, originally scheduled for July and late August, was postponed twice after authorities revoked permission, citing security concerns and fears of unrest.

For several months, the PTI had been seeking permission to hold a public meeting in the capital, but the administration repeatedly refused it.

In March, the party moved the Islamabad High Court (IHC) after receiving no response from the district administration.

In July, the PTI had announced a protest, but it was postponed after the district administration refused to allow it. The protest was rescheduled for August 22, but the NOC was cancelled at the last minute, and a new date was set for September 8.
