The raids in Islamabad come after large protests in the capital demanding Khan's release from prison.

Pakistani police have arrested several lawmakers and leaders of former Prime Minister Imran Khan's party in a series of raids in Islamabad, according to party officials and authorities.

A police spokesman said on Tuesday that four people had been arrested, but Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) put the number at 13, saying they were arrested from various locations in the capital, Islamabad, including some outside parliament.

The raids followed a massive PTI rally on Sunday demanding the release of the 71-year-old cricketer-turned-politician from jail where he has been for over a year.

The crackdown began late Monday with the arrest of PTI chairman Gohar Khan.

Khan was ousted as prime minister in 2022 after a falling out with military generals, who largely decide who leads the nation of 241 million people.

Media footage showed police pushing lawmakers into vehicles during detentions outside parliament, which opposition leader Omar Ayub Khan called despicable.

Yesterday's mass protests sent a chill down the government's spine, Khan's aide Zulfikar Bukhari said in a message on X, calling the detentions illegal.

Others arrested include senior leaders Shoaib Shaheen and Sher Afzal Marwat, added Bukhari, who is also PTI spokesperson.

In February, PTI-backed candidates won the most seats in the general election. However, they fell short of the majority required to form a government.

His rivals instead formed a coalition to establish a ruling alliance led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Calls for Khan's release

The rally to demand Khans' release was marred by clashes between his supporters and police that left a senior police officer injured, police said.

The PTI said the violence erupted after police fired tear gas shells at a peaceful gathering in an attempt to disperse it.

Some party leaders, such as Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur of the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, criticized the ruling alliance and the military's speeches at the rally.

“Put your affairs in order,” he advised the military, warning against any attempt at a military trial for Khan. “I am not afraid of the military uniform.”

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said Gandapur had threatened to release Khan from prison by force and incited his supporters to engage in violence.

In a statement on X, PTI said Khan thanked his supporters for holding the rally peacefully and quoted him as saying: You all broke the shackles of fear to stand up and fight.
