Pakistan arrests Imran Khan loyalists, stoking tensions again

(Bloomberg) — Pakistan has arrested top leaders of former Prime Minister Imran Khan's political party on charges they attacked police at a rally the day before, escalating political strife in the country.

Police have arrested Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Gohar Ali Khan, who heads Khan's party while he is in jail, according to the group's text messages and police spokesman Taqi Jawad. The party said 13 key leaders have been arrested by authorities.

The former cricket star has been languishing in jail for more than a year, facing multiple cases after a breakdown in his relationship with the country’s powerful military. Khan is accused of corruption, abuse of power and inciting attacks on state property. Khan claims the cases against him are politically motivated and trumped up after he was removed from power in April 2022 in a military-backed parliamentary confidence vote – a charge the military denies.

Khan has been convicted in four separate cases since last year, all of which have been overturned or his prison sentence suspended by higher courts. Candidates loyal to Khan won the most seats in national elections in February but failed to form a government, while his rivals, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, formed a coalition government.

Political uncertainty will intensify, Zafar Hilaly, a Karachi-based political analyst and former diplomat, said by phone. Lines have been crossed by both sides.

Sharif's government had to wait some time to get final approval from the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) board for its $7 billion loan, raising concerns among fund managers and traders. The government had expected the lender to approve the program in August.

The arrests came a day after the leaders held a rally outside the capital, Islamabad, on Sunday demanding Khan’s release from prison. Khan’s party leader, Ali Amin Gandapur, who is the chief minister of the northwestern province of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, warned the coalition government to release Khan in two weeks or face consequences. Khan’s supporters clashed with police, who tried to disperse the rally, injuring people on both sides, local media reported.
