Pakistan News: Top leaders of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan's party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), were arrested by police on Monday, September 9, outside the parliament building after a session of the National Assembly.

Speaking about the arrests, police spokesperson Jawad Taqi said PTI party leaders Advocate Gohar Ali Khan, Sher Afzal Khan Marwat and Advocate Shoaib Shaheen were arrested by Islamabad police, as quoted by Dawn.

According to reports, Marwat was the first to be detained. Referring to his arrest, PTI said in a message on X that the PMLN government should be ashamed of this action taken against a sitting MP. This should be seen as a direct attack on democracy.

The party accused the capital's police of executing illegal orders and called on the Inspector General (IG) of Islamabad Police to stop the act.

Marwat was arrested for violating regulations framed under a new Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Act, 2024, sources told Geo News. The sources further said that the PTI lawmaker was accused of clashing with police officers the previous day.

In another message on X, PTI condemned the illegal arrest of party president Barrister Gohar. This is a moment of shame for the entire parliament as it should be seen as a direct attack on the remaining democracy in Pakistan. The Speaker of the National Assembly should be ashamed of himself for allowing such disrespect towards the parliament. Pakistan has plunged further into undeclared martial law, the message said.

A message posted on X by Marwats' account read: “The state has once again proved how scared it is of Imran Khan and his soldiers! Remember the person they are dragging so harshly is neither a terrorist nor a murderer. His only sin is to consider Imran Khan as his mentor, to raise his voice for the poor, to raise his voice for Pakistan, to talk about the supremacy of democracy, freedom of Pakistanis and the rule of law!” Opposition leader Omar Ayub Khan condemned the arrests and claimed that Islamabad police had formed teams to arrest him, PTI chief Zartaj Gul Wazir and other colleagues.

“This fascist regime and its supporters have gone completely crazy,” Omar wrote in a message on X. “I just got to know that they have included my name along with that of Zartaj Gul sahiba and other colleagues in two more FIRs. Islamabad police teams have been deployed for our arrests.” He added that other PTI lawmakers were still inside the parliament, unable to come out due to the police presence.

“Our only crime is that we dared to challenge the status quo and raised our voice in support of our beloved leader, Prime Minister Imran Khan Sahib. We will continue to do so,” he added.

Imran Khan, 71, faces multiple court cases and has been in jail for nearly a year after being convicted in a corruption case.

The former cricketer-turned-politician was arrested on August 5 after being convicted in the first Toshakhana corruption case filed by the Election Commission of Pakistan. Since then, he has been in jail in connection with different cases.

The arrests have drawn sharp criticism from the PTI. Imran Khan-led party chief Zulfi Bukhari strongly condemned the arrests, demanding that the leaders be released immediately. It has been over a year now, and they are still using the same tactics that have failed time and again, he said in a statement on X.

These illegal arrests will not change anything. They will only increase public anger and hatred towards this puppet government and its supporters. Apart from Omar and Zartaj, other PTI leaders including Hammad Azhar, Kanwal Shauzab, Naeem Haider Panjutha, Amir Mughal and Khalid Khursheed are also likely to be arrested.

Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless.
