Police arrest MPs who held rally for Imran Khan's release

Pakistani police have arrested several lawmakers and leaders of former prime minister Imran Khan's party in overnight raids, a day after the party held a massive rally in the capital demanding his release, the party and police said on Tuesday.

The former cricket star has been in prison for more than a year since his ouster in 2022. He was jailed after a falling out with powerful military generals that sparked the worst political unrest in decades in the economically volatile country of 241 million people.

A police spokesman confirmed the arrest of four people but did not give details of the charges. Khan's party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), said a dozen of its lawmakers had been detained in Islamabad. Others had sought refuge in parliament to escape police, it added.

“Attack on democracy”

MPs demonstrated at the National Assembly on Tuesday to demand action against what they consider to be an illegal entry by law enforcement into the premises of Parliament.

“Plain clothed people entered the parliament and arrested people's representatives. This is an attack on Pakistan's democracy,” PTI lawmaker Ali Muhammad said.

National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq announced that he would investigate the complaints. He said that if the allegations were proven, legal action could be taken. He ordered all detained MPs to return to parliament.

Media footage showed police pushing MPs into vehicles outside parliament. Opposition party leader Omar Ayub Khan called the action “despicable”.

“Yesterday’s massive protest sent a chill down the government’s spine,” Khan’s aide Zulfikar Bukhari said in a message on X, calling the detentions illegal.

Party president Gohar Khan is among those arrested, added Bukhari, who is also the party's spokesperson.

Violence at rally

PTI-backed candidates won the most seats in February's general election. However, they fell short of the majority required to form a government. Khan's rivals formed a coalition to form a bloc led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The crackdown came a day after a PTI rally in the suburbs of Islamabad to demand Khan's release was marred by clashes between supporters and police, in which a senior police officer was injured.

The PTI said the violence started after police fired tear gas shells at a peaceful gathering in an attempt to disperse it.

Some party leaders, such as Ali Amin Gandapur, chief minister of the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, criticized the ruling alliance and the military in their speeches at the rally.

“Put your affairs in order,” he advised the military, warning them against any attempt to put Khan on military trial. “I am not afraid of the military uniform.”

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said Gandapur had threatened to release Khan from prison by force and incited his supporters to engage in violence.
