Prime Minister Narendra Modi launches major semiconductor project
Semicon India is a three-day event that focuses on Indian semiconductor policy.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said that India offers an integrated ecosystem for semiconductor manufacturers and the world can bet on the country. “This is the right time to be in India. In 21st century India, things are never at stake. When things are at stake, you can bet on India,” Prime Minister Modi said at Semicon India, a three-day event dedicated to India’s semiconductor policy.
The Prime Minister said the country dreams of having a made-in-India chip in every device in the world. Over Rs 1.5 lakh crore of investments have been committed in semiconductor manufacturing and several projects are underway, he added.
“India offers a unique proposition: a reformist government, a growing industrial base and a technology-driven market,” he told chipmakers. The country has an integrated ecosystem for the semiconductor sector and offers stable policies and ease of doing business, he added.
“We are preparing a workforce of 85,000 technicians, engineers and semiconductor experts,” he said.
Prime Minister Modi said India will play an important role in developing the global semiconductor industry. “Earlier, the rule was to let chips fall where they fall. Today, it is about producing more chips,” the Prime Minister added.
India's mission on critical minerals will also support the semiconductor industry, Prime Minister Modi said, adding that work is underway to set up a chip research centre at the Indian Institute of Space Sciences.
