'Rebel' Gandapur vows to support Imran Khan in first speech after 're-emergence'

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, who remained “unreachable” for several hours after his explosive speech at the September 8 PTI rally in Islamabad, resurfaced at a Peshawar Bar Association function on Wednesday, declaring that he would support jailed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan no matter what.

I want to convey a message to our leader [Imran Khan] that we support your ideology, said the KP chief minister, who remained “missing” for hours following the fresh crackdown on the former ruling party for violating the new public assembly law enacted following the party's September 8 rally in Islamabad.

This development was confirmed by PTI Member National Assembly (MNA) Shahid Khattak, with sources saying the CM was “busy in various meetings” in the federal capital following the party's show of power.

After his return, the former ruling party claimed that Gandapur had held a long meeting with government officials on the law and order situation in the province and he could not be reached due to mobile phone jammers at the venue of the meeting.

Addressing the members of the Bar Council today, the KP CM asked the institutions to change their practices, which he said will benefit the people, the country and themselves.

He also asked them to “sit with the incarcerated PTI founder and resolve the issues”. Our aim should be to uplift the country and not ego, he said.

Referring to the recent terrorist attacks in the province, Gandapur said he had told the apex committee that the trust of his people and the police had been shattered. “My province is bleeding and they do not care,” he rued.

Since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in 2021, the country has been plagued by increasingly violent attacks, particularly in the border provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa alone suffered 25 deaths in 29 terrorist attacks in August.

The Chief Executive announced sending a delegation of the provincial government to neighboring Afghanistan to hold dialogue and resolve the issues. I am responsible to the people of my province, who voted for the PTI and brought it to power.

Speaking about the cases registered against him following the Islamabad rally, CM Gandapur said he was accused of pointing a pistol at the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP).

Dismissing the allegations, he said he did not see anyone in blue uniform referring to Islamabad police. [] This is not a threat, he asked the officer.

The prime minister also stressed that standing up against oppressive rulers was an act of jihad. “When I say such things, they accuse me of provoking the people,” he added.

He also called journalists his “brothers,” saying it was okay if journalists tarnished his reputation.

The KP CM's statement came amid uproar over his “vulgar and threatening remarks against journalists, mainly women, during the public rally on September 8.”
