Kamala Harris takes on Donald Trump in heated presidential debate
Kamala Harris delivered a series of blows to Donald Trump on issues ranging from abortion to his fitness for office, putting her Republican White House rival on the defensive in a fierce clash Tuesday that could define the US election.
The vice president struggled early in her first and perhaps only debate against Trump before the November election, as the candidates clashed over high inflation and international trade.
But during the 90-minute debate, Harris portrayed Trump as an extremist unworthy of the American presidency and provoked the former Republican president. At times, he struggled to contain his anger and stick to his message.
“I’ve traveled the world as vice president of the United States and world leaders are laughing at Donald Trump,” Harris said in one of her most scathing digs. “I’ve spoken to military leaders, some of whom were with you, and they say you’re a disgrace.”
National and key-state polls in recent days have shown the race for the White House on a knife-edge, making Tuesday's debate one of the most anticipated in American political history.
In a flash poll of debate viewers conducted by YouGov, 43% of respondents said Harris won the debate, compared to 28% for Trump, while 30% were undecided.
Traders predicting the winner of the presidential election on PredictIt, a political betting platform, now value the vice president at 57 cents, ahead of Trump at 48 cents. The candidates were neck and neck before the debate.
Their first meeting came nearly two months after President Joe Biden's disappointing performance in a debate with Trump forced him to end his reelection bid in July and endorse Harris for president.
Harris' first major attack on Trump on Tuesday was on abortion, when she accused the former president of being immoral and responsible for appointing the Supreme Court justices who in 2022 struck down the constitutional right to terminate a pregnancy.
You don't have to abandon your faith or deeply held beliefs to admit that the government and Donald Trump should definitely not be telling a woman what to do with her body, she said.
Harris appeared nervous and struggled to express herself fluently in early exchanges on the economy. But she grew in confidence as she defused some of Trump’s attacks and launched her own, including mocking Trump for being selfish and weird.
He talks about fictional characters like Hannibal Lecter, he talks about windmills causing cancer. And you'll also notice that people start leaving his gatherings early, out of exhaustion and boredom, Harris said. The only thing you won't hear him talk about is you.
Trump has repeatedly criticized the Biden administration's record on immigration and blamed Harris for the surge of migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border.
They let in criminals, millions of criminals. They let in terrorists, Trump said. They destroyed the fabric of our country.
Trump has criticized Harris for changing her mind on issues such as fracking, an important topic for many voters in the swing state of Pennsylvania. But he has often lost his groove when she has challenged him on the size and enthusiasm of her campaign rallies.
At one point, he recycled conspiracy theories on the Internet, including a debunked claim that Haitian immigrants in an Ohio town had kidnapped pets and eaten them. In Springfield, they eat the dogs, the people who came over… They eat the cats.
Harris targeted Trump for denying he lost the 2020 election to Biden and for fueling the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.
Donald Trump was dismissed by 81 million people… and he clearly has a hard time accepting that, she said.
Trump has advanced a well-known defense that he is a victim of political persecution, citing his imminent assassination in Pennsylvania in July.
“I probably got shot in the head because of what they say about me,” Trump said. “They are a threat to democracy.”
He scored early on on the economy. “They’ve had the highest inflation in the history of our country,” Trump said. “People can’t go out and buy cereal, bacon, eggs or anything else. The citizens of our country are dying because of what they’ve done.”
Harris responded by saying the U.S. economy was in tatters when Trump left office, forcing Democrats to clean up the mess the former president left behind.
She also sought to distance herself from her predecessor. “Obviously, I’m not Joe Biden. And I’m certainly not Donald Trump,” she said after he criticized the Biden administration’s record on inflation. “And what I offer is a new generation of leadership for our country.”
Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, a Trump ally, said the former president had missed opportunities. He added: “I think he got upset a couple of times, she got upset once.”

After the event, Harris' team immediately challenged Trump to a second debate in October. Trump has said he would consider participating. The vice president's campaign has also been boosted by the endorsement of Taylor Swift, the world's most popular music star.
In an unusual move after the debate, Trump visited the debate room where his supporters seek to convince the media that their candidate won.
Since Harris entered the race for the White House, she has benefited from a surge in enthusiasm among Democratic voters, which has helped her overtake Trump in the polls.

But Harris' momentum has stalled, with her lead over Trump in national polls now down to just 2.2 percentage points, according to the Financial Times polling average. The former president also has an edge in four of the seven key swing states that will decide the election.
After commemorating the September 11 terrorist attacks 23 years ago on Wednesday, Harris planned to campaign in North Carolina and return to Pennsylvania, while Trump was scheduled to travel to Arizona and California.
The debate, hosted by ABC News, was held at the National Constitution Center in downtown Philadelphia in a small, intimate setting, with no live audience and podiums relatively close together.
