Islamabad, Sep 12 (PTI) A Pakistani top court on Thursday asked the government to clarify the uncertainty surrounding the possible military trial of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan.

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) heard a petition filed to restrain Khan's possible military detention and trial for his involvement in the May 9, 2023 violence in which supporters of his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party allegedly attacked military installations after his arrest.

The court expressed concern about the potential trial of a civilian before a military court, stressing that the issue was a source of serious concern to both the applicant and the judiciary.

During the hearing, Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb asked Deputy Attorney General Azmat Bashir Tarar to seek directions from the Attorney General's Office on the matter and provide a clear response to the court.

The court adjourned the hearing until September 16, giving the federal government time to submit its response.

If the government refuses to hold a military trial, the request will be considered moot. However, if such a trial is contemplated, the court will continue its investigations and decide on the case.

The 71-year-old founder of the PTI party has been in jail since August last year after being convicted in some of the nearly 200 cases he has been charged with since his ouster in April 2022.
