MAKI Welcomes Kaesang's Clarification to Anti-Corruption Body Regarding Private Jet
Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesian Anti-Corruption Society (MAKI) coordinator Boyamin Saiman has praised Indonesian Solidarity Party General Chairman Kaesang Pangarep for appearing before the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to provide clarification regarding the gratification allegations.
President Joko Widodo's youngest son Kaesang was ordered to visit the anti-corruption body's office in Jakarta after traveling to the United States on a private jet, drawing public attention.
“I appreciate Kaesang’s proactive approach in handling this case. This will undoubtedly facilitate the KPK’s investigation into the gratification allegations,” Boyamin said in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Boyamin expressed hope that the KPK would quickly conclude its analysis of Kaesang's clarifications to determine whether the facilities he used constituted gratification.
If the facilities are considered a gratuity by the KPK, Boyamin urged Kaesang to return an equivalent amount to the state.
Earlier, Kaesang and his wife, Erina Gudono, had faced significant public scrutiny on social media over their use of a private jet while traveling to the United States during a period of widespread protests in Indonesia over the Constitutional Court's ruling on regional chief appointment thresholds and age limits.
Netizens, especially on social media platforms like X, have been discussing the possibility of a gratuity after Erina Gudono shared a view from inside the private jet on her Instagram account.
As a result, Kaesang was reported to the KPK by Boyamin Saiman and a professor at the State University of Jakarta (UNJ), Ubaidilah Badrun.
Kaesang visited the KPK office on Tuesday to provide clarification regarding the use of the private jet.
“My presence in the KPK is a testament to my commitment as a responsible citizen. I am neither a state administrator nor a civil servant. I came here voluntarily, not in response to an invitation or summons,” said Kaesang, who was ineligible to run in the gubernatorial election following the House’s decision to uphold the regional election law despite mass protests last month.
Kaesang confirmed that he had provided clarification to the KPK regarding the use of the private jet during his trip to the United States.
“I clarified that during my trip on August 18 to the United States, I took a friend's plane,” he noted.
However, Kaesang declined to provide further details about the trip, suggesting that inquiries should be directed to the KPK.
“For further information, please contact the KPK directly,” Kaesang added.
Earlier this month, Kaesang's brother-in-law Bobby Nasution, mayor of Medan, North Sumatra, was also reported to the KPK for allegedly accepting the use of a private jet.
Bobby's trips were scheduled to take place in February 2023.
