PTI allowed to stage power show in Kahna, Lahore, with 43 conditions tomorrow

LAHORE: The Lahore district administration on Friday granted permission to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to stage its high-profile show of power on the Ring Road of the provincial capital Kahna tomorrow (Saturday) as per the High Court's directions.

In a no objection certificate (NOC), the deputy commissioner has set 43 conditions for tomorrow's public gathering, including fixing a time limit for the gathering from 3 pm to 6 pm.

Further, the conditions also included that KP Chief Minister Gandapur should publicly apologise for his vitriolic remarks at the Islamabad Jalsa on September 8, while all those found guilty of hate speech at the previous public gathering will not be allowed to participate/appear on stage.”

He added that no anti-state/anti-institution slogans or statements should be raised during the rally and banned the PTI from hoisting the Afghan flag and bringing Afghan paid labour to Jalsa.

No declared offender will attend/appear at the Jalsa. If this is done, the Jalsa administration will be responsible for his arrest, failing which he will be tried for abetment, under another condition.

In a video statement, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan urged the administration not to create hurdles in the path of the rally.

He said that the participants could reach the rally venue on time if obstacles were created for them and hence the rally could end on time.

PTI workers should participate in the rally in a peaceful manner, the PTI chief said, while urging the workers to reach the protest venue on time so that the entire process could be concluded on time.

PTI founder and jailed former prime minister Khan called the rally a “life or death” situation and expressed optimism that his party's show of power in Lahore would be successful.

Opposition leader in the Punjab Assembly Malik Ahmad Khan Bhachar, accompanied by lawyers, met the deputy commissioner of Lahore to seek permission for the rally.

The PTI chief and the district administration are arguing over the timing of the rally, with the former insisting on extending the time limit till 11 pm.

Negotiations are underway to finalize the time of the rally, sources said.

Bhachar told reporters outside the DC office that the final draft of the SOPs was yet to be released and they would contact the authorities after its release.

Authorities denied the party founded by Imran permission to hold the public rally at Minar-e-Pakistan earlier in the day and deliberated on finalising another venue.

Meanwhile, the party has stepped up preparations and prepared a container for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur. The KP Chief Minister will use the container to reach the rally venue in Lahore from Swabi, sources close to PTI told Geo News.

Besides, CM Gandapur will also address PTI workers in central convoy at Swabi before leaving for Lahore, they added.

Citing the installation of containers and heavy police deployment at the KP-Punjab border, a spokesperson of the KP CM said heavy machinery including 50 cranes, excavators and other equipment has been transported on the Peshawar motorway which would be used to remove barriers on the way to the Lahore rally venue.

The developments come after the Lahore High Court (LHC) earlier today ordered the PTI to submit an application to the city's deputy commissioner (DC) for holding the rally in the provincial capital while directing the latter to decide on the matter by 5 pm today.

Justice Muhammad Tariq Nadeem and Justice Farooq Haider heard the plea filed by PTI leaders Aliya Hamza and Sheikh Imtiaz Mehmood.

Probable arrests of “3,700 suspects”

On the other hand, the government has chalked out a plan to arrest “3,700 wanted and declared suspects” in the May 9 mayhem cases when they will participate in the Lahore rally, Punjab government sources revealed.

“Lahore police have compiled data of wanted persons through Safe City cameras and formed special teams which would be identified and arrested through the use of artificial intelligence and other modern technologies,” they said.

The party founded by Imran Khan has been trying for months to hold rallies across the country, but authorities have repeatedly denied permission, citing security concerns and other reasons.

They nevertheless managed to organize a public rally on September 8 in Sangjani, Islamabad.

This show of force was quickly followed by a crackdown on party leaders, some of whom were even allegedly “picked out” from the Parliament premises for allegedly violating the No Objection Certificate (NOC) issued by the administration as well as the “Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Bill, 2024”, a law that came into force just a day before the rally.
