Imran Khan says September 21 rally in Lahore will be a must-see event

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan has expressed optimism over the success of his party's rally in Lahore scheduled for tomorrow (Saturday), saying holding the event was a life-and-death situation.

The former ruling party is determined to hold a public rally in the Punjab capital despite any obstacles the government may put in place.

The ousted prime minister, speaking to reporters at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi on Thursday, said the nation would come out to attend the rally no matter what situation it faced.

“I have been in prison for 15 months and I am ready to stay there even longer. People should not be afraid of going to prison,” he said, adding that he had been asking the party to respect the Constitution for 28 years.

“The Constitution gives us the right to assemble. I request the nation to mobilize for its future on September 21 in Lahore. The Supreme Court is the last institution from which people expect anything. If the Supreme Court is also destroyed, Pakistan will become a banana republic,” he added.

The cricketer-turned-politician also said that there should have been a thorough discussion on the proposed amendments to the Constitution, adding that the intention behind the amendments brought in the dark of night was now known.

“To destroy the Supreme Court is to destroy democracy, and to destroy democracy is to destroy freedom. When freedom is destroyed, people become slaves,” he said.

He said people were imprisoned for a year without trial, while three arbitrators were granted extensions of their terms through constitutional amendments. The future of Pakistan is linked to investment, and no one would invest in Pakistan except Pakistanis living abroad, he added.

Zardari and Nawaz Sharif have fled twice, and now they are going to flee again, everyone knows their money is outside, Khan added.

“Under our government, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) collected Rs 480 billion and another Rs 1,100 billion was to be collected. These amounts were given to NRO-2 and now NAB has nothing to do but take revenge,” he said.

The jailed PTI leader then questioned the source of Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi's income, claiming that the security czar had five million dollars abroad.

He said Naqvi had justified money laundering.

£190m suitcase

The special court in Islamabad is set to hear the £190 million case against Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi today (Friday).

During Thursday's hearing, Khan's lawyer Zaheer Abbas Chaudhry completed cross-examination of NAB's last witness and lead investigator Mian Umar Nadeem.

NAB lawyers have requested that Bushra Bibis's lawyer also begin cross-examination of the IO.

Bushra's lawyer Usman Riaz Gul will cross-examine the same witness today.
