Jokowi asks Transport Minister to change Nusantara airports status from VVIP to commercial

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has asked Transport Minister Budi Karya Sumadi to change the status of Nusantara Airport in the archipelago's capital (IKN). The change is from VVIP status to commercial status.
“This is my first time going down to Nusantara Airport. Nusantara Airport, as many often say, is a VVIP airport. I have already ordered the Minister of Transportation to immediately convert it into a commercial airport,” Jokowi said at Nusantara Airport, IKN, East Kalimantan, Tuesday (24/09/2024).
Jokowi said the changes were aimed at making the airport later able to be used for Hajj and Umrah departures. In this way, he said, Nusantara Airport can benefit the local community.

“Commercial airports for Hajj, Umrah, and then for others,” he said.
“Yes, to make it more advantageous. Not only for VVIPs, not. More useful for those who want to perform Umrah, those who want to perform Hajj, those who want to fly and go to IKN. “I think it is more useful,” Jokowi continued.
Jokowi aims to have the airport operational by December with a capacity of 200,000 passengers per year. However, if commercialized, the airport could handle 7 million people per year.
“It may be until December, the capacity will be 200 thousand. But once (the airport) becomes commercial, the capacity will reach 7 million per year,” Jokowi said.
