President Jokowi Makes First Landing at Nusantara Airport
President Joko Widodo made his first landing at Nusantara Airport, Nusantara Capital Region (IKN), East Kalimantan province, using the RJ-85 presidential aircraft on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at around 16:15 WITA. The arrival of the aircraft was greeted with a water salute procession that marked a historic moment in the airport's operations.
After the landing, President Jokowi inspected a number of airport facilities to ensure feasibility and further preparations. In his statement to the media, President Jokowi expressed his gratitude for the success of the first landing.
“Thank you God for that landing the first, everything went well, thank God, everything went well. “And this is the first time I go down to Nusantara airport,” the president said after the inspection.
Nusantara Airport, which was previously planned as a VVIP airport, will be converted into a commercial airport to serve general aviation, including Hajj and Umrah. The President stressed that the change of airport status from VVIP to commercial airport will be carried out soon.
“I have already ordered the Minister of Transportation to immediately transform it into a commercial airport, a commercial airport, a public airport, which can be used for Hajj, Umrah and other things,” the president said.
The president estimates that the initial capacity of Nusantara Airport could reach 200 thousand passengers by December 2024. Meanwhile, the long-term goal is to reach 7 million passengers per year once it is fully operational as a commercial airport.
On the objective of converting the airport, the President revealed that the process will begin after the signing of the corresponding Presidential Regulation (Perpres). The President also explained that the main concern behind changing the status of this airport was to make the facility more useful to the general public.
“Not only for VVIPs, it is even more useful, for those who want to perform Umrah, those who want to perform Hajj and those who want to fly to and from IKN, I think it will be more useful,” the president stressed.
With this step, it is hoped that Nusantara Airport will become an important infrastructure that will support the mobility of people to and from IKN, as well as strengthen Indonesia's tourism and transportation sectors.
