Court gives Imran Khan, Bushra Bibis' lawyer one last chance for cross-examination in 190 million case

The accountability court hearing the £190 million case has given a final deadline to lawyers representing Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder chairman Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi for cross-examination by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) investigator.
The hearing took place at Adiala Jail, where Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were present.
The court adjourned the next hearing until Friday due to the absence of Bushra Bibi's lawyer Usman Gul, who is reportedly suffering from dengue fever.
The defence sought a delay, saying Usman Gul's illness prevented him from appearing. NAB lawyers, however, pointed out that Bushra Bibi had four lawyers appointed in the case, and any of them could have conducted the cross-examination.
NAB lawyers argued before the court that the defence itself had obtained an order from the Islamabad High Court to continue the trial. Now, the defence lawyers are deliberately delaying the remand hearing.
The court informed the defence lawyers that they were being given a “final opportunity” and that the cross-examination of the NAB investigator should be completed in the next hearing.
The court, headed by Justice Nasir Javed Rana, granted the defence a final opportunity to cross-examine the NAB officer in the next hearing.
The ₹190 million reference hearing took place in Adiala Jail, where the PTI chairman and his wife were produced in court. Defence lawyers including Intizar Panjutha, Naeem Panjutha and Faisal Fareed Chaudhry were present, while the NAB team was represented by Sardar Muzaffar Abbasi and his legal team.
The NAB prosecutor opposed the adjournment request, pointing out that the defense lawyers had already submitted 12 power of attorney letters. He argued that the other senior lawyers present could cross-examine the witness.
The prosecutor noted that the final witness in the £190m case had appeared in court at 23 previous hearings but had not yet been cross-examined.
On September 18, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) barred the accountability court from issuing a final judgment in the ₹190 million case involving Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi.
A two-member Supreme Court bench of Chief Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb heard the couple's plea for acquittal in the case. While the court directed the trial court to continue the proceedings, it said no final verdict should be given at this stage.
On September 7, Imran Khan had filed an acquittal plea in the case, citing the Supreme Court's decision on the NAB amendments, which restored the earlier legal provisions. However, the accountability court rejected Imran Khan's plea on September 12, after hearing arguments from all parties in a hearing held at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.
Earlier, the defence lawyers of Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi had missed a hearing due to commitments at the Lahore High Court, preventing the cross-examination of the last witness in the case, Mian Umer Nadeem, an investigating officer. The NAB prosecutor accused the defence of employing delaying tactics to stall the case.
In the £190 million corruption case, Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi and others are accused of embezzling 50 billion rupees (equivalent to £190 million at the time) sent by the UK's National Crime Agency (NCA) to the Pakistani government.
This sum was part of a deal with a real estate tycoon. On December 3, 2019, Imran Khan, as prime minister, received cabinet approval for the deal with the NCA without disclosing the details of the deal.
His former cabinet members say the approval was sought without disclosing details of the transaction.
NAB claims that Imran Khan and his wife acquired land worth billions of dollars from the tycoon, meant for an educational institute, in exchange for completing the settlement deal.
