IK accuses govt of trying to destroy judiciary – Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder chairman Imran Khan on Wednesday said the main objective of the proposed constitutional amendments was to extend the tenure of the Gang of Three.

They have destroyed the country and now they are determined to destroy the Supreme Court, Khan said, while speaking to reporters informally at Adaila Jail in Rawalpindi after the hearing of the Al-Qadir Trust case against him and his wife Bushra Bibi.

About the proposed constitutional amendments, he added that the objective of the Constitutional Court is to reduce the powers of the Chief Justice. After reducing the powers of the Chief Justice, they want to appoint Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa to the Constitutional Court, he said.

He said that Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa is the beneficiary of the constitutional amendments.

Khan also accused the government of destroying the judiciary to cover up election fraud and prevent the PTI from returning to power.

PTI founding chairman said Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa never spoke about the treatment of PTI members, especially women detained after the May 9 unrest.

He demanded that the appointment of the next Chief Justice be announced immediately. We fully support Justice Mansoor Ali Shah as the next Chief Justice.

Khan reiterated that if the PTI was not allowed to hold a public rally in Rawalpindi, his party would hold protests.

Earlier, Accountability Court Judge Nasir Javed Rana, who was hearing the $190 million National Crime Agency (NCA) scam case, commonly known as the Al Qadir Trust case, adjourned the hearing till September 27 due to the absence of Bushra Bibis's lawyer.

Khan and his wife were produced in court.

Bushra Bibis' lawyer Usman Riaz Gulls told the court that his lead lawyer had tested positive for dengue fever and requested the court to adjourn the hearing.
